b-i-l's apartment building has been wrecked by the earthquake in NYC. I didn't even know there had been one.

You may find it on here.

tbh, so long as I don't find it on my doorstep, with whatever facial hair he's sporting these days and with a suitcase and a fag hanging from his mouth I'm fine!:D:D

Seriously, he can't come here because he has a semesters worth of job.

    New York/state of emergency
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/8723793/Hurricane-Irene-New-York-declares-state-of-emergency.html
New York mayor Michael Bloomberg predicted "tropical storm-like conditions such as heavy rains and winds of 60 miles per hour or more" for New York. Flood warnings were issued for areas including the financial district.
60mph winds are nothing (get a lot more than that a lot of times each year here) .... but it's all that rain that'll be the issue. And rain/flooding and trying to get away/fix a broken roof isn't easy to do.

And a classic from the above link .... "Survival experts were last night drafted into US television studios to advise viewers. "Don't expect the government to take care of you," one told CNN."

    It all went well/smoothly.

It's weird though, living in a house where somebody's died..... it's like it's not sunk in yet, they're still around.... because nothing's really changed except they're not here.

oh pastures, I do feel for you. Even in a detached way it's odd. And then accounting for speshulness it must be even harder.

Just don't expect too much of yourself.

Sorry I lurk but it's so hard keeping up with the NP :D

Shedloads more to do now.... deciphering the will, planning for the closing of gazillions of bizarre accounts/pensions/shares etc .... forms for the remaining old, new home for the remaining old, understanding financial positions..... declutter house, move old, wait for house to sell (I'll be camped in one room mostly)..... I could be caught up in all this for the next 8-12 months!!

I know it might cost a few ££ but have you considered getting a professional in to sort the will etc? I only ask because it's a big task and one that takes a lot of dealing with people- if you're not up for it, it might save a lot of hassle? I am sure the NP could find someone reputable?

Sounds like you have enough to do just sorting out the remaining old- can you delegate anything to siblings? Who are the executors?
