I've only been to Dubai to transit onto another flight, and it was the worst place I have ever been trapped in whilst awaiting onward travel (with the possible exception of the train station in Brussels).
Luckily we were on the way to the Maldives, so it made the horror worthwhile.0 -

were you just in thje airport or did they let you out?
I quite like airports (airside). Bookshops and cheap booze...well, probably not in the middle east.0 -

Worst airport for me was 6 hours in Osaka Airport. I was pretty broke and in transit to Aus.
The most entertaining thing to do was to sit opposite a machine that spoke to people to sell them (possibly) travel insurance. It was on a sensor and made people jump.
The next most entertaining thing was to chat with a Canadian Politics student who so far in his studies had picked up the word realpolitik and was determined to use it as much as possible. I gave up talking to him and went back to the jumpy travel insurance machine. It was a better conversationalist.
The second worst airport was Dubrovnik during the Cold War. We were ushered off the plane by armed guards who had AK47s trained on us (actually pointing at us, not at the ground or something). They didn't have much of a sense of humour.
Best is Changi in Singapore IMHO. Really nice bar, it's got a pool airside and security isn't too intense.
Worst place was Frankfurt Station at night. Full of junkies. Someone OD'd right in front of me. He died I think. He certainly looked pretty dead.0 -
You'll all be pleased to know I have spent some time looking further afield for GPs this morning. There is one that looks a bit less grim and within comfortable drive and I've asked them if I can join there and I am outside area by about two miles but are thinking about it....they don't do call outs so in theory its not their problem. One of the funny things here is they are closer than last gp to last home, but its a funny mix here of rural and small town....so there is some urban thinking and some rural thinking.....in ''rural'' terms its no distance....in their opinion I'm closer to other small towns, in opposite direction...that on roads they are easier to get to/park etc isn't a factor, they look at miles.0

i was just trapped in the terminal. after being on a 7 hour flight, or whatever it was, i usually like to walk around for a bit so i don't die of DVT. in dubai airport they seemed to have handed out shopping trollies to everyone who was there, there were kids pushing those mini ones about. the whole place was just a massive noise pit of people pushing shopping trollies around and the aisles were not wide enough for it, so it just became a massive log jam of idiots. i hated it.0 -

i think i've been to osaka - is that the one where the runway is built out into the sea, so when you land it looks like you are just crashing into the sea?
changi is my favourite transfer airport as well - loads of space and loads of places to get away from the idiots! the transit hotel is pretty handy, and you can get a good walk in, i usually walk all the way around the U and back as quickly as i can to get the blood flowing again.0 -

i thought these days, with all that rubbish that is being spouted about "choice", that you were allowed to register at any GP you like regardless of whether it is the closest one to your house, and you can just decide which hospital to be treated in.
or is it the case that that is all rubbish, and you have to take what you are given still?0 -

Not insensitive - just wrong, for many many reasons.
Firstly, some people already sued. Secondly, they are WAAAAY out of time. Thirdly, there has been real supression of the facts....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Well, I dunno. I was just told I'm out of area but they'll see and call me back.
My best friend told me the single doctor in here dad's old single doctor practise is not good or nice. The three closest here are the same grimmer than grim practise. I just popped to the nearest bigger town and went in one of the others that came up on the NHS choices thing to see and it was awful....I just can't go there.
re hospitals, IME you get a choice. Here, we have treatment centre in the nearest town....which is also where one of the area emergency out of hours doctors services is based....for a and e we have a drive to the city either side. We're about half way between...one is further, being on the far side of the city, but it also doesn't have the reputation for e.coli that the other has and doctors have told me they have elected that further one as their choice even though further away.
(I thing daddybear or someone with a name like that is a doctor in that area so would know how valid those concerns are or not) and davesnave would know.
In any case, my breasts are still covered by BUPA so once I get a referal I can do it through that. I might just bite the bullet and find a localish private gp and do it that way. At least when you pay for it you feel some little control and are treated like a human being.0
