I've been concerned about PN too. Our thoughts are with you Pastures if you're lurking.

Of course, some of that may be overkill for idyllic rural Britain.... :D.:)

Police crime map shows zero for our village in the last recorded month. :D

We are not particularly 'good.' A village not far away had a total of only two incidents in the whole of 2010, and they also have a pub.:(

Anti social behaviour accounts for most of the incidents around here, but almost all of that centres on two little roads. It's rare to see a police car in daytime, unless they're lost. ;)

Someone mentioned vigilantes. We have them, but they are 'nice' people. I think you'd be likely to get what they call a 'handbagging' just as a warning, before any radical action. According to my sources, the last time that happened was when someone nicked identifiable parts from someone else's tractor. :rotfl:

I'm fairly sure she thanked some posts on Monday night. Probably just very busy with visiting, 'arrangements' and stuff. She must also be drained after her week away, hammering etc. Even 'fun' comes with a physical/mental price when it's active/creative/intensive.

Apologies for speaking about you as if you're not here PN :o.....but you aren't, just ATM. :)

My poor dad who is still a manual worker even though he's in his mid seventies has broken his thumb after smashing it with a hammer:(. Apparently there's not much hospital can do and its very painful.

Knowing him he'll still be back at work tomorrow.

    Sounds painful :(

My dad also still works in his mid seventies though only a few hours a week. I'm sure he would still do it for no pay.

The best thing he ever did was get a dog to take him a regular walk :)

He seems much fitter/ healthier than he did pre dog.

The sports facility at Batchwood (St Albans) caught on fire last night. Police are treating as suspicious but not linking with riots at this stage. It's a real shame to lose facilities though. Quite a valuable local resource.

The same thing happened in Portsmouth last night. A disused pub caught fire, although it's not been treated as suspicious. I got off the train and saw a huge plume of smoke and black clouds and thought "Uh-oh here we go", but it was "just" a normal fire :)

Insurance policies often exclude damage due to riots. Is there some central government pool for that sort of thing, or are owners just left with a pile of ashes?

An encouraging article on the subject: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14458505
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Hi NP's...well it's all going off in S E London unfortunately.
I live inbetween Woolwich and Eltham up on the hill and Eltham had 200 'Millwall' supporters (locally they are known as being a different group) 'protect' the High St last night.
A few YT with back talk indicate what's going down. Stephen Lawrence was murdered around the corner from me and, whilst 99% of us us all live alongside and get on, the undercurrent of feeling is always just 'there'.
Nothing seems to have changed in all the years I have lived here sadly...in fact it's worse.

Very useful tips from Hamish..thanks...we may have to apply them here though I won't be getting a dog. We have sensor lights and zilch to steal (purposly have no curtains so they can see that there's BA worth breaking in for).

I haven't read the riot thread since last night but won't post the Eltham stuff on it.....but it's really ..umm...inconvenient.

We have panic buying of fuel as all the petrol stations are closing early or not opening at all, chain stores all closing @ 5pm, it's disrupting everything, most independent shop owners are taking their own precautions as feel the police don't 'do' anything + some are sleeping in their stores tooled up 'just in case'.

If I could, I would move away tomorrow for good but the parents are in Eltham ...as far as I know they are fine as I haven't heard anything from either plus Dad would poo poo it as he says 'well, I got bombed in the war' and so on. He wouldn't be fearful of a gang of 40 hoodies despite being 78 either.

The atomosphere locally is as it was back in the 80's and 90's....it never goes away, just rumbles along under the surface....the conflict, the hating of all the different sectors and so on.

Glad you feel ok LIR and PN.....hope she's ok too.

So dog-dog's leg comes out from underwraps on Monday.....so......today I had to get the vet out for a horse. :( Had an EXTREMELY unpleasant vet who not knowing what was wrong tried giving me some flannel. She swore at the horse (who is not naughty or uncooperative but was in pain and didn't trust the vet)...she then made a very contradictory diagnosis, which I pointed out......and she asked if I thought a pony magazine made me a vet. I explained, rather pithily my background and she drew her neck so far back in that her chin hit her collarbone. I don't expect a diagnosis always...some times the best answer you can get is ''I'm not sure, but I think we should cover all basis, painkiller, anti biotics, run some bloods''.....that answer is a whole lot better than flannel. Diagnosis is, IMO, an art not always an accurate science, I don't expect the impossible. I do expect civility, honesty and no frustration taken out on the horse. I was seething. Think i still am.

"I explained, rather pithily my background"

I keep finding bits in your posts that seem blindingly obvious to you, but leave me utterly confused.

My wife's cousin is a retired vet. He's ever such a nice man, and I expect that his excellent bedside manner with the owners (stall-side manner?) contributed to his success. Your lady vet could probably learn a fair bit from him.

Actually, I met my wife through him, and my family knew him because my mother was his wife's gynaecologist. And my mother knew everyone's names, when they were born, and whether they were a breach or a normal presentation. :)
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
