I'm not sure about the countryside, and I'm not sure about your personal circumstances, but in the town intruders simply avoid places with dogs. Number 45 has a dog, so break into number 47. Oops, 47 has a burglar alarm, so break into 49. It's incredibly rare for an intruder to break into somewhere knowing that the householder is home.
Obviously, that doesn't apply if you store the crown jewels in your home, in which case I'd suggest getting a safety deposit box. It's more difficult with valuable paintings and furniture around the place.
rurally, noise and alarms can be good...or useless. Here our nearest neighbour would definietly hear it. But would also cause some distress to livestock over winter. In the countryside most places have dogs.
Before I moved ''up at the big house'' in next village is a fairly typical house burglary woman was tied up and left for 36 hours before found, the dog was shot.
We have nothing worth stealing in house , and atm it certianly looks like we have nothing worth stealing. They can take the dreadful vanished up to look like it was painted picture my mother bought me last week from a charity shop (I think she paid a bit too, silly poor old thing).. As it starts to look smarter it will be more of an issue. There still will be not much worth stealing, but they might think there will be stuff.

Reminds me of the vase I bought at a bargain price from a charity shop. My wife made me donate it to a different shop. I was right about the bargain, though. The second shop priced it up at 3 times what I'd paid for it.
I've always hankered after living in the countryside, but I hadn't factored in the security worries. I mean going equipped with a gun on a burgling spree is worth loads more time in jail, if caught. That's serious stuff, even if the burglar only ever intended to shoot the dog.
Maybe, if you are refurbishing anyway, you should make a safe room? How difficult is that, really? Just a very heavy door for the en-suite bathroom with some heavy duty bolts? No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
We're orf to Devon, with my best mate and her 2 year old daughter. Have fun, nice people!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

DEFRA chap looked shockingly like one of the geese, identical eyes. I had to stop myself pointing this out to him.
Right, looking at security stuf now. The men in my family believe that our existing lighting is not good enough and want new lights with the cameras included and with screens made of somesort of plastic that is unbreakable. To me a flood light is a flood light and I don't want new ones when money is tight. Everything is a money fight these days.0 -
lir, argos has some really cheap PIR lighting at the moment, £9.99 each. You could get some of those put up and even if they only need to do the job for a couple of years, then you can start to upgrade as and when you're more on an even keel and the house looks more break-in worthy.

The sports facility at Batchwood (St Albans) caught on fire last night. Police are treating as suspicious but not linking with riots at this stage. It's a real shame to lose facilities though. Quite a valuable local resource. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Some one suggested to me it was some people who had been unable to break in to the galleria and were taking out their vengeance on something else but local press say police not linking it to the unrest at the moment. Probably insured and will be rebuilt better (hopefully). Batchwood is of course at the less salubrious oysterfields/new greens side of town...vivatifosi wrote: »The sports facility at Batchwood (St Albans) caught on fire last night. I know a lot of people who park near Batchwood and walk into town. I suspect that will change!
Its really funny I was in town yesterday and there was a real smell of burning and a lot of people were worried that the riots had spread there. Turned out someone was having a bonfire in their back garden in Victoria Street. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? My poor dad who is still a manual worker even though he's in his mid seventies has broken his thumb after smashing it with a hammer:(. Apparently there's not much hospital can do and its very painful.
Knowing him he'll still be back at work tomorrow. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing?
