My concern with a lot of these "yoot dem" is that their definition of "respect" is totally different to everyone else's definition.

That's exactly what I'm trying to say. And we obviously saw the same girl!

fwiw, I feel very strongly, that respect is earned. So while I respect ''the Police'' I have disrespect for some police officers, but I would treat them all with courtesy. You can be respectful....towards someone's home, personal space, without respecting them, because its the courteous thing to do.

But even then, if respect is earnt, so should disrespect be earnt...not handed out as default option!

Am I being terribly liberal when I say the vast majority of teenagers (of either sex) I meet are polite, hard working, and decent law abiding citizens? London is a city of 6 million, and there were a couple of thousand yobbos running amok. But most people are not like that.

No, I don't think you are. But I do feel this goes back longer then the last week.

Still no news from Pastures. I'm wondering what's going on with her family. :(

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

The door at the place DH is leaving has been kicked in. Probably nothing to do with riots, and nothing inside seems to have been damaged/taken, but the police are rather busy. So dh is taking a lock of a shed to temporarily secure the front door before moving tonight....no where open for locks.

Amongst all the awfulness, I have a little piece of good news - well, it's good news for me, and good news for some debt collection agencies too.

When late-nearly-ex died, his estate was insolvent. He had a few thousand pounds of CC debts and no assets to pay them with. We claimed the write-off value of his car, and his half month of salary for the bit he worked between his last payday and the day he died, but that wasn't enough to pay all the debts after we'd paid for the funeral, which takes priority. We have been hoping all along that we would be able to pay them all off eventually - his car insurance policy has a clause about an extra £5k if you die in a road accident, and that would be enough to cover it all.

However, the car insurance people said they wouldn't pay out without a proper death certificate. At the moment I only have a "coroner's interim certificate" which says that he's dead, and what his injuries were, but nothing about a road accident causing them. Naturally they wanted more than that, and said we'd have to wait for the full certificate, which will be issued after the inquest and will have the cause of the injuries listed as well as the injuries themselves. My probate solicitor (who's very good on wills and probate but not experienced in fatal accidents) has been doing an excellent job of keeping the debt collection people (to whom the CC companies sold the debts) off my back.

However, when I saw my PI solicitor a little while ago, I happened to mention this to her. She said that in her experience you could usually get insurers to cough up for this sort of thing by sending them the full post mortem report, which mentions the accident. Of course, neither I nor my probate sol had a copy of the PM, but my PI sol did, so she sent it to the probate sol, he's sent it to the insurers, and they've agreed to pay up immediately. I've just had to sign something to say I want it paid to the probate sol so he can use it to deal with the estate's debts, and I'm off to the post box now to post it. It should all be sorted very quickly now.

I'm not blaming either of the sols for the delay - the PI one didn't know we had the problem, and the probate one had no reason to doubt the insurers when they said they couldn't pay out without the full death cert. I am somewhat miffed with the insurers for demanding the full death cert and not mentioning that the PM would do just as well, but maybe the person dealing with it had never dealt with such a protracted case before, and was used to ones where the inquest was straightforward and held fairly quickly, so waiting for the full death cert wasn't a problem.

Anyway, they are paying up now, so I'm happy about that.

That's one burden lifted from your shoulders Lydia, so that's good.

Is there a claim against a third party for the accident? Or else why is there a PI solicitor involved? And why is the coroner so slow, if this all happened at the end of last year? Sorry if I'm prying. I'm just trying to make sense of your previous post.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

It's not a simple accident but a series of related accidents, there were other people who died and also two with serious injuries, and it is probable that there were other factors involved beyond driver error. I expect you'll understand why I can't be more specific on a public forum, and also why it's taking a long time for everything to be investigated to a point where all parties are ready for the inquest.

    Ah, lost a post.

Summary: This must be a big weight off your shoulders. You are amazing, and things like this are an unneeded burden/distraction when you are doing what you need to do as a mother and for yourself. I'm glad part of that is gone.
