    We have put money into our house and its rental, not a lot but have painted etc to make it more homely. We could potentially be here for years and wouldnt really see it as a waste by putting some money into it.
    I really struggle to understand what your brother sees in her Cinny, she sounds awful!!

    Men can easily be blinded when we think with our hearts. Passion makes men capable of almost godlike feats but can cause us to miss the mot obvious things right infront of us.

    ETA I don't mean THAT kind of passion per se.
    This was 6 months out of date so I've changed it.

    Honestly, no not even a few tins of paint. I'm used to landlords who let water stream down my walls, or who forget to pay the morgage so scary blokes turn up at the door, or who give me a £3 tin of spray to beat an ant infestation covering the entire flat. And yes, those were actually 3 different properties! I know I've probably had some bad experiences and most landlords are decent, but I don't see any point putting more money into someone else's pocket than nessisary, the colours of the walls don't hurt me so I'd rather save the tenner on a tin of paint and put it into my own savings to buy my own place. If you have security of not being booted out it's probably different, but I've never felt a rental is anything other than temporary because they've never been cared for well enough to consider staying in longer term.

    Sounds like you've had some pretty bad experiences with renting!

    As someone who knows I will never (well not in the foreseeable future anyway) be able to afford to buy somewhere I honestly dont mind spending a little money on making a rental house more homely.
    Painting some walls wouldnt be putting money into our landlords pockets anyway as he only agreed to let us decorate if we promise to put it all back to magnolia if/when we leave.

    We are on year long contracts with him so have some kind of security I guess. To be honest our landlord is great. We have only ever met him once as he lives in London, but he has always been great to us. Even sent (and paid for) an emergency locksmith round when we got burgled because he wanted to make sure that I was secure at home while OH was working nights.

    Sounds like a good landlord. The apartment we rent would be seen as high end so no need to paint, we did buy accessories to make it more homely though. I have always gone for the nicer end of the property rentals though, rather than grotty, so don't mind accessorising!

    We painted our room as was bright orange! They were happy for us to though as long as it was neutral. The rest of the flat is white/cream so no idea why that room was orange.

    Our landlord is good, never met him though as he lives in newcastle so we deal with letting agent. He always sorts any problems out quick for us.

    Had a nice lunch in pub with my friend today and sat outside which was nice.

    Our first flat was a really grotty low end rental flat and never again! Would rather pay a little more each month and have something nice. The house we are in now had a brand new kitchen and bathroom fitted before we moved in and all painted neutral (some of which we have changed) - would never go back to renting somewhere grotty!
    We were quite lucky in that we managed to haggle the landlord down quite a bit with the price when we made it clear we wanted something long term. He has no mortgage on the property so we dont have to worry about that either.

    See this is what gets me, I always did pay a bit more, always went for the nicer areas and things that had just been done up. And I seemed to always get the cheap !!! landlords who couldn't afford to actually maintain the place now they had it! The worst one was definately the last one, as it was a new refurb (not even finished when I signed for it) and it clearly had a leaky pipe or cracks in the stonework somewhere as water just poured down the kitchen wall and I had about an 8 ft x 4 ft expanse of black mould by the time I moved out. He was a nice bloke like, and completely oblivious to the fact I hadn't paid him 4 out of 13 months rent as I disagreed with the state of the house until he fixed it (told him I would withold rent until it was fixed by phone, he didn't do anything, but still thought I paid!)

    I think my family just rents out houses very oddly! Kind of like a new build when you move in, just minus the carpets. Then it's up to the person to paint it how they like, put carpets down, do what they want really. It's long term lettings we do, some of them have been in for 20+ years so it's always very much their home. People around here can't afford to buy, so this is the closest they can get.

    The pub lunch sounds good, Wendz :) Glad the weather was nice enough to sit out!

    Our kitchen quote came back, around £700 less than what we'd thought. So very happy :D

    Can you not ask them to buy a house here, I would happily rent it off them :D

    OHs parents live in a similar sort of place. They moved into their house when they got married 27 years ago, they have put new bathroom in, new kitchen, decorate whenever they like, they have security in that they cant just be given 2 months notice to leave.
