Plum jam would be nice as a base for a sauce with duck breasts, and I've successfully made a nice sauce for chicken by combining blackcurrant jam with a little balsamic vinegar.

Any of them would be good as a filling for doughnuts, with hot waffles and ice cream for dessert, in jam tarts or as a filling for a victoria sponge. You could also use them for hot sponge puddings. I suspect heating the jam and serving it warm would disguise some of the flavours your OH is less keen on, so hot puddings may be the way to go, rather than filling cakes and swiss rolls with it.

My old man wont eat bread and jam because it's poor mans food. My mother and I always used to have it as dessert though.

  • How about bread custard pudding with jam spread on the bread triangles and then custard poured over. A quick and very scrummy desert!

Also how long does jam keep? The Plum jam was given to us about 18 months but has been kept in the fridge and not opened. The others are all in a cupboard. Will that be ok?

Jam keeps for ages; the sugar acts as a preservtive ;) We have an existign thread of ideas to use up jam so I'll add this one to keep ideas together.

Does anyone have any ideas on using up a jar of rhubarb jam? Its home made (from my parents) but just don't seem to use it on bread that much and I don't really want to bin it!

  • You could mix it with some strawberry jam...? Most mixed fruit jams are apple rhubarb and some red fruit anyway.
