I've come to that conclusion too. This has become a rather convoluted tale, but the simple solution would have been to exchange the £379 TV for the £299 one & if the bank was not accepting the difference as a refund, to give a gift card for the £80 instead.
It seems the OP didn't want that though, but instead wanted the £379 TV for £299 & the bonus of a dtd payment as well.0 -

That's not on at all!! £80 cash in bank a/c = £80 gift card to spend only in Tesco?? You'd really accept this?
No chance that's a reasonable option. A cash refund would have been more appropriate in the situation you put in your post.
It's only a game

Oh dear. You do sound angry don't you? It was in fact just meant as an example and yes, I probably would accept as it would be easy to spend that on my monthly shop, although of course, they do offer other gift cards too.
I've had to accept credit notes in the past, as it has been either that or nothing.
The thing is though, Tesco do not have to do anything by law. The TV was not faulty, just bought in error. £379 was paid for a £379 TV. In theory, they do not have to do anything at all. If this happenned in Curry's, Comet or even Sainsbury's and you were being charged £379 for a TV you thought was £299, surely you would question the payment there & then & most likely exchange it for a £299 TV before you made payment? I know I would. It's only in Tesco's where it may be profitable not to do so.
However, yes, you do have a point, it perhaps wouldn't suit everyone but I don't know of anywhere that would give you a cash refund when you paid on a card, which is why perhaps my first thought went to a gift card as the quickest solution to the problem. Offering cash refunds where cash wasn't used in the first place is a whole different can of worms, & no, we're not entitled to it.0 -

there was not any 299 tellys, the 299 lable was under my telly on display and there was also a pile of the same display telly (mine) at the end of isle with 80 off. but even thought it was misprice dthey refused to let us have it for 299 (i would have been happy with taht) or even a full refund but that did not work again when we went back to store on saturday night no one has mentioned double the discount to tescos.
i don;t get into the habit on purchases things such as bbq, gordon ramsay dinner sets etc in order to obtain dtd fraudulantsly and then return item as has been known on here.
we just wanted a tv for 299 that was our max budet or a refund for 379 but on 2 separate days on 2 separate occasions this was not possible.
thought you guys would have experience in dealing with this tht is why posted here not really looked on many other threads so not that familiar wiht what they are.0 -
I'm finding the situation a little difficult to follow, so allow me to break it down to see if I'm following you correctly:
There was a TV on display, priced at £299 - let's say it's a C4000 or something similar. It has been marked down from £379, but is out of stock.
Elsewhere on the shop floor is another display with a different TV, let's say it's a D4000 or perhaps a D5000 range set (a newer, or higher spec tv). It is priced at £379, and the SEL makes no specific mention of any form of reduction.
Above this display is a sign saying "£80 off" or something to that effect. This model IS in stock.
At this point, although you know it's a different model to the one you originally sought to buy, and without knowing if it had been reduced by £80 (or indeed, knowing if it had been reduced from £459) you decide to buy it.
At the checkout, although surprised to be charged £379, you hope that you were correct and proceed to pay and head to customer services where they are unable to refund you due to strange circumstances concerning Co-op's credit or debit processes.
Out of interest, is the co-op card a credit or debit card?
You head home with no TV and no refund, and subsequently return to the store the following day and collect your TV, but are still awaiting a refund or a DTD. Tesco has acknowledge that the "£80 off" sign was in the wrong location, but won't refund DTD because the price clearly said £379 and that's what you paid.
Have I grasped this correctly? I know you hoped for a DTD but really, I don't think you have much of a case and now you have your TV, which you agreed to pay the stated £379 for. How are you out of pocket?
One thing I am curious about is whether Tesco took your details when selling the TV, or if not when you paid for it, when you collected it? If they didn't then if you're feeling really evil, you may be able to use that as leverage to get something from them - after all, if they didn't, they're breaking the wireless and telecommunications act 1964 (I think. I can't be bothered to look it up) and could be fined a few thousand for it.0 -

I too am finding this one a little hard to follow - sorry OP but it is very confusing.
Can I just ask an obvious (to me) question? If you only wanted to spend £299 (and weren't looking to maximise a misprice as you say) then why did you pay the £379 at the till? Surely you must have queried this then?

Apparently it's much quicker, easier and more convenient to pay then go to CS and wait a few days for an uncertainty.0 -
I don't know if it's true fot DTD as well, but previously (when Tesco used to refund the entire amount and let you keep the goods), this only happened if you complained after you had paid. When I pointed out an error on a case of wine of something silly like 5p a bottle, the checkout guy called the supervisor who corrected the misprice. I queried this and she said it was only if you had paid already. So any errors I notice now I wait until I've paid and complain at CS, this may have been what the OP was trying to do. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
If Tesco make sure all their prices are correct they will never pay out on this so that ought to be their prime aim.0 -

it was my tv on display wiht a 299 label underneath
i either wanted a telly for 299 or not at all, dtd had not been mentioned they were simply not able to refund me on a coop debit card on 2 occasions.
so on the 2nd time we went back we took telly as security as we had paid for then changed our mind.
what we are being expected to do is check our bank to see went it goes out of ur accoutn then go in to get a refund. dtd has not been discussed as yet on both occasions they have only tried to refund 379 and card would not accept.
we rang up head office to discuss refund and said they ere lucky we are not type of people that make a fuss and refuse to move as some said on here as son was in car and i could not stand any longer.
its refund situation that is so redicusouls nad do not know why it has occured. whether you think e are trying it on or not for dtd we are still unable to even manage a striaght forward refund.:mad:0 -

it was my tv on display (the c4000) wiht a 299 label underneath. so went to get this c4000 from a pile on teh shelves. the shelves had another price on for 379.
so a pile had 379 label underneath and display model (same) had 299 label. on 299 label there was no model number visible just the samsung 32" lcd/hdtv or whatever i am only a owman that is when i lose interest 2 samsung lcd/hdtv would be same in my opinion whether they were c4000 or c4100.
