Real Life MMD: What should I do about the bridemaid's weight?

  • erm ..... isn't it partly the bride's fault though for buying the dress without a fitting first? We all know that shop sizes can vary even for the teeny sizes. I would never have bought for my bridesmaids without them trying first. When I was a standard UK size 12, in some shops I had to buy a 14, yet I was a 10 in others. Buying without trying would have been crazy.

The bridesmaid needs to go to the doctor and seek advice about her weight. She will be suffering from health issues with all that weight. It is most likely that this lady is suffering from a compulsive neurosis of some sort and as such needs help. Much more important than a wedding is that help is saught regarding the mental and physical problems very likely effecting this person. Obesity is not just a physical problem, it is a mental problem too.

Yes because being a size 16/18 would make her obese!:rotfl:
  • really not sure that there are many medical reasons (other than high dose steroid treatment, prader-willi syndrome and poss PCOS) that cause people to be excessively overweight. The thyroid one is always trotted out and usually the first thing that people ask about when they tell me they "can't lose weight" - hypothyroidism can cause excess weight gain but ultimately is still a case of too high an intake. My thyroid goes wappy on occasions and sometimes I can eat all I like and then have to start on the carbimazole again.... I then have to stop eating so much and get exercising otherwise my weigh will boomerang.

I have read this with shock and disgust!!

There are plenty of very fair comments but generally the overall attitude of the society that we live in has come out loud and clear. I stumbled upon this page by accident and see it written a while ago.

I have an ED which no body in my life know about as I am not ready to discuss it with them yet, 12 months ago I was 23 stone 10 pounds, I can already hear the OMG!, and how did you get to be so fat etc, now I am 11st 9lb so you wouldnt expect or class me as having an ED, I go to an ED clinic and have treatment etc, but why did i develop it, because of society attitude to large people!!, you are so judgemental about fat people, sit on their bottoms all day and do nothing and eat eat eat, it is not always the case, it wasn't with me, so I hear how did you get so fat?, well 4 children and a bad education, i wasn't eating ENOUGH! shocked/, thought you might be! eating too little can cause weight gain!! albeit I wasn't eating correct foods but I still was not consuming enough calories in the day.

My point is that the poor woman who we are discussing who can have no say in this question, could potentially have an ED, such as Bulimia which causes the weight to fluctuate, so if you were any kind of friend you would LISTEN to what your friend is saying in general conversation, there will be plenty of clues, she would ask if she is ok does she have any worries in life at the moment? A true friend would care ask and listen.

To end such a controversial topic, if we were all the same shape, height, weight, personality, all blonde blue eyed the world would be so boring, so let go of your attitude and think abit more out of the box, never ASSUME!

I've never heard such nonsense. Healthy food is far more expensive than fattening food. 2 pink lady apples is about £1. For that you can get 6 packets of crisps or a large packet of biscuits. 1 punnet of strawberries is at least £2, you can get multipacks of croissants for that. I could go on, but it is far more expensive, to eat healthily than it is to eat badly. And don't get me started on the cost of corn on the cob!

Healthy eating is not that expensive! A bag of smart price apples (approx 6 in a bag) is roughly a pound, I am not disagreeing with strawberries, however, a bag of smart price bannana's - depending on size can vary from 6 to 10 bannanas per bag - again, not much more that a pound. Corn on the cob may be expensive, but tinned sweetcorn usually 3 for a £1. Not including the vast range of frozen veg you can buy, big bags for between £1 - £1.50. I spend approx £70 per two weeks to feed myself healthily. Not very much at all.

Anyone who refuses to eat 'healthily' because they claim its too expensive is just using it as an excuse.

that's basically what I said in one of my earlier posts (#83). I'm only able to eat vegetables because I buy frozen ones so no wastage and I buy the value range of fresh fruit and salad. I have £20 a week to feed myself so am used to shopping wisely if I want to eat properly.

What rubbish! You could buy 2 boxes of own brand Shreddie type breakfast cereal for little more than the price of the croissants, they will last longer, keep you fuller for longer and are far healthier.High fat foods, convenience foods and takeaways are far more expensive than cooking healthy food from scratch and that is often the problem. I have a close family member who is severely obese and she admits its because she cant be bothered to cook or eat properly as it is easier to buy ready meals or junk. I feed my family of 8 (which has 3 adults and one teenager) on a healthy diet for £100 a week. My budget is £120 but I never spend that much. How do I do it? Because I cook proper meals from scratch. It would cost me atleast 4 times that to eat junk all the time. They all have atleast 2 pieces of fruit a day aswell as veg with dinner (mix of frozen and fresh). And things like baked beans, tinned tomatoes, tinned sweetcorn all count at as one of the 5 a day and they are cheap.

Healthy food being expensive is a cop out and an excuse.

The poor girl, I'm sure she is aware of her weight gain. Get her to try the dress on, then SHE can make the decision. With commitment you can easily lose a dress size in a few weeks. I highly recommend slimming world for good, healthy weight loss that means you can still have the odd treat. As for the poster who said healthy food is expensive, yes it is if you want pink lady apples! Potatoes, carrots, multipack apples are NOT expensive. Also frozen veg is usually good value. If you're happy to eat chips, chicken nuggets etc then I'm sure you can't get too fussy about your apples!

ROFL - who said I eat that? I was making the point that healthy food is more expensive than junk, not that I ate junk. I cook everything from scratch, including bread!

I just understand families would choose to feed that to their children or eat that because of cost restraints. What's wrong with wanting pink lady apples, strawberries and corn on the cob anyway. They're lovely. The cheap apples taste disgusting, as do cheap potatoes.

Smart price apples taste disgusting. Tinned sweetcorn is nowhere near as nice as corn on the cob. Why should I eat cheap, non organic rubbish???? Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries are hideously expensive. Sure I can find cheap veg if I want, but I can find even cheaper crisps. Besides, it's just a point I'm making. I recently lost 4 stone and yes, it was by eating less. But did I spend less, not at all. I spent more.
