Correct grammar and spelling is desirable, but not essential, because it makes the message easier to understand and reduces the possibility of misunderstanding.

The problem of mis-spelled or ungrammatical sentences is dwarfed by a sin that is even worse, especially in on-screen text. This is the type of post where the sentences are strung out into one massive paragraph.

Over and over again on this, and other forums, contributors write comments that would be very interesting to read but which the average reader tires of by the second line because it is not split into chunks of text that one can easily scan with the eye.

I used to try and read these at one time but, I'm afraid that when I see one now, I just skip it without trying.

Presentation is as important as spelling and grammar if you are trying to get a point across.
  • Yes I agree that it is desirable to have a perfect post. No errors to catch the eye and distract from the actual meaning of the post itself, but having to point out these errors without actually having any input into the post is what I am referring to.

I usually try to make sure my posts are gramatically and punctuationally (?) correct, that words are spelled correctly and the post 'reads' OK with paragraphs where appropriate.

However, that's just me and I don't expect everybody who posts on here to be the same.

As long as a post is understandable, I can't see a problem.

What does irritate me, however, is excessive use of exclamation marks and question marks!!!!!!!

    Do I make myself clear???????

Seriously, why does anyone need more than one ! or ?? (the second ? is the ending to my question).:)

Because they mean different things. Or different nuances anyway. Take 'Why did you do that?' and compare with 'Why did you do that???'. The first is a straightforward question, the second says 'Why did you do that? (You were stupid to do so)'.

I agree it can be a bit irritating. But, for me, it's not because I don't think you need the extra - it's because I often don't like the tone it gives the comment!(!!!!) ;)

I can see where you're coming from but lots of posts use multiple !!!! and ????? when they aren't putting emphasis on.
    Take the OP's post:
Havent been on here for a long long time due to petty arguments, bullying and the FREAKIN GRAMMAR POLICE !!!

Really, is there any need for it ??

Some people have difficulty with writing what they are trying to express. Some can't type very well therefore easier just to bash out their thoughts. But why why why do these higher than mighty people seem to appear on many threads, have nothing to add thats positive but just pick up on bad spelling grammar etc ???

Why not get themselves a job as a proof reader where errors are to be pointed out and not at someone just looking for everyday advice ??

This infuriates me as my daughter is dyslexic and has problems with paragraphs etc. So does this mean she can't post on here unless she makes sure her post is 100% grammatically correct ?

Honestly some people really need to get a life and understand that we are not all the same and neither do we strive to be.

    And breathe

    :D

I can see the effect the 3 x ! has in the first sentence but the double/triple ? don't add anything - at least to me.
