If you still have faith in the postal service then I think thats pretty rare these days, I must say that I used to, and also used to think people were pulling a fast one when they say things weren't receieved or that they had sent things to me that I never got myself, but when it comes to family and friends posting things that never arrive, that are really embarassed that the kids never got the birthday card with the cheque in (and have never ever missed a birthday before!) and now drive some distance to ensure it arrives personally I have kind of changed my mind!

I have sent some things to people that have never arrived and it infuriates me! One person on ebay wants a refund for an item that actually left me out of pocket before I sent it - the item sold at 99p, the ebay and paypal fee's were about 99p so didn't make a penny, on top of that I then slightly underestimated the postage of about £3 so ended up paying extra for that (I have since learnt by this mistake of course!) - that doesn't even include the time and effort I put in to selling this item and packaging it up, printing out packing slips and labels etc!! Anyway, I have been asked to refund them the £3.99 they paid so basically I will be out of pocket once again, until, if ever, I get the money back from the post office... It makes me so cross as its not my fault and yet its muggins that is out of pocket!! [rant over - lol]

In the end, I made up a big lockable parcel box for him to put my parcels in and there's a 6 digit number on the inside of the lid which he writes down on his pad for any items that require my signature and this system works fine and we both benefit greatly.

I don't understand how it works. What's the 6 digit business all about?

Our local postie is not my favourite person at the moment. 3 times running now I have had items marked "DO NOT BEND" bent in half and shoved into my letter box. I don't get it!! It's not like it wasn't clear either - printed in red ink letters about an inch and a half high.

What does the rule book say about this sort of behaviour?

IIRC the RM posting guide does suggest posting (non to be bent) items in Do Not Bend envelopes. Surely they must follow what they recommend. You should be compensated.
    I know nothing
  • well we have a do not bend the other day so my partner ran out and asked what he did it for his reponse was

well i bend all the post

my partnet said "even do not bend letters"

    Postie said "yeah"

fella said "im gonna report you for this"

postie then replied "so what do i care im still gonna bend ur post"

what a pig he didnt even care that he ws bending photos. how bout we tell his postie to bend all his post bet he wud be angry

    but life in general.
Crime, bad workers of allsorts, ect ect ect are everywhere, not just in the smoke.

You may be right, but as one who's moving out of London I selfishly hope not.

I mean, I'm a bit fed up with packaging up all the bank statements, financial letters and other important personal stuff for people at other addresses that comes through my letter box every other day, and sending it to Adam Crozier, along with a note saying sort it out!

I'm not trying to be awkward, but consider this typical event: I was running late for work and bumped into the postman as I was leaving the house. The conversation went someting like this:
Me: Morning! Got any mail for me?
Him: Grunt (hands over two letters).
Me: (Looking at letters) Oh, one of these isn't for me.
    Him: Grunt. Is.
Me: (Checking again) No, it's addressed to a woman two streets away.
Him: No, it's for you, they're both for you.
Me: Look mate, I think I know what my own name and address are!
And, of course, the issues with parcels already discussed.

With all that said, you may be right about crime. IIRC, the Royal mail Act only allows criminal background checks on PO counter staff and Christmas casuals. So a bent postie can get nicked in one office and get a job in another the next month. :(

I have to ask - why do royal mail, instead of knocking your door / ringing bell when htey have a parcle for you, do they put a card through instead?

Its not the first time i have been awake (about 6am) and alert, and the postie has not came with a parcel but infact a card saying he had just tried to knock my door - thus expecting me to collect it....
and its not the first time ive knocked on a door many times then put a card through only to have customer say"he didnt knock but just left a card"
Why wouldnt i knock when id rather give you the letter or parcel than carry it all the way back to office, think about it now.
  • My postie is lovely, he brings parcels for me that would usually wait at the depot for a van, but he brings them on his bike as he knows that my partner will be in and if he ever has any parcels for the neighbours we take them for him.

He is great. Thanks for doing a great job Mr Postman.

yes totally agree. also, i have had loads of recorded delivery items end up disappearing and/or getting returned to me by rm, marked 'not collected'. when i contact the buyer, it turns out that the postie never left them a card to say they'd tried to deliver it, so it sits at the depot for 2 weeks then comes back!
