I also work for Royal Mail sorting the letters. I must stress that it is shocking the amount of envelopes that aren't sealed up correctly. Alot & I mean alot of people send passports, family photos, driving licences, jewellery, cheques & cash in envelopes that inevitably fall out. They lay there & we can't find the original envelope they came out of (all given to manger after we've search area). Packets are also the same, we do try as hard as poss to get the mail to people. This Christmas has been horrendous.....Example of one letter i got this week that went similar to this

20 'the house with the pigs'
    colcester (not that area really)

as you can guess, it never got there

so seal parcels & envelopes well.......if sending money in a birthday card it is advisable to then put it into a brown envelope.

Why a brown one edina? I think if that was to be a widely known fact then it would be all the brown ones that happen to go missing... especially when Royal Mail don't compensate for money sent.

I've never had a problem with my posties and think they do a great job! Thanks for the info OP - some things I didn't know there!

I worked as a postman, but just for a week.

I'd had enough after that, it was incredible. The Post Office there was so useless it was unbelievable.

They used to get phonecalls from people who had tracked their parcels in to the sorting office and days later they were still there. That meant postmen looking through squillions of parcels trying to find them as they were just not getting delivered.

There also used to be loads of letters dropped by the sorting machines/tables and just left there....very rarely picked up.

Of course that was just 1 week and I'm sure it's nothing like that now....well I hope so anyway !

I have to ask - why do royal mail, instead of knocking your door / ringing bell when htey have a parcle for you, do they put a card through instead?

Its not the first time i have been awake (about 6am) and alert, and the postie has not came with a parcel but infact a card saying he had just tried to knock my door - thus expecting me to collect it....

Postmen are not allowed to start delivery untill 0630 - 0645 or maybe later !!
They also have to attempt delivery and not just shove a card through.

Next time this happens try and catch him/her walking down the path and ask them for the package and hear what thier exuse is for not having it !!!

What is the sitaution with posties using thier own car to transport mail??I often wonder what would happen if the car was stolen or broken into while the postman is delivering. Also does their car insurance cover this - the liability must be huge as they could be carrying £1000's in cheques etc.???
  • The thing with the postie's putting cards through and not knocking appears to be quite normal.

About 12 months back I was up early and eagerly awaiting a special delivery parcel from the RM. The postie came and put the "sorry you weren't in" card through the letter box without even knocking  . I was bloody fuming(!) and went racing after him asking what his game was. Apparently they don't generally bring parcels with them because they're a pain in the !!!! to carry round all morning which, while I can understand and sympathise with to a point, the sender has paid to have the parcel delivered to my house, not the local sorting office.

In the end, I made up a big lockable parcel box for him to put my parcels in and there's a 6 digit number on the inside of the lid which he writes down on his pad for any items that require my signature and this system works fine and we both benefit greatly.

I'm not too impressed with our posties, there is one who is great but there is another who thinks it is really funny to tease our dog with the post through the letterbox... he never used to eat the post but he seemed to start doing it out of the blue!

One day I was off work and I came down the stairs because the dog was barking (hes only a little timid spaniel too!!) and there was the postie in all his glory pushing the mail through the letter box and then pulling it back out repeatedly... he dropped the mail and ran off when he saw me standing there!!

Needless to say he hasn't done it since, but the dog has taken to chewing up the post where possible, and now he goes mental at anyone who comes to the door!

Although I know the people at my local sorting office really well! They are so lovely and they know me by name, cos I pick up loads of stuff from there and ring them for local collect ect. I can't fault the people there, they do a great job.. I have only ever had one thing I ordered go missing in the post, but the couldn't find it... 2 months later it turned up at my front door a bit grubby but it got here! lol

Our local postie is not my favourite person at the moment. 3 times running now I have had items marked "DO NOT BEND" bent in half and shoved into my letter box. I don't get it!! It's not like it wasn't clear either - printed in red ink letters about an inch and a half high.

What does the rule book say about this sort of behaviour?
