I adore my Slow Cooker, Microwave and Pressure Cooker and I think I'm one of the few people who actually uses the sandwich toaster. The microwave gets used a couple of times a day plus it's good for stashing stuff from the cat while it's cooling down. The SC is currently being used at least twice a week and the PC also maybe twice a week. My stick blender is another favourite - you just have to be careful not to 'over-blitz'!

I was thinking of getting a steamer, but then I got a set of pans with a two-tier one - brilliant. Oh loves steamed fish with mash and greenbeans - so it's ideal as it all cooks on one ring!

Personally could do without my electric can opener (what was I thinking of?) though the little knife sharpening thingy on it has come in handy! Don't use my drip-feed coffee maker much these days since getting the cafetiere - which is used almost daily.

Small appliances I couldn't do without:-

Hand mixer = cake + buns every week
Food procesor (for the blender on top) = Yorkshire Pudding
    Scales = for above
Steamer = potatoes in bottom, all other veg on top. Has saved a fortune

Small appliances I wouldn't want to be without:-

My Radio tuned to Radio 4
    Wok
Good baking tins + greaseproof paper

And I get mad when I can't find the vegetable peeler!

i have got this amazing halogen oven which i bought from one of the shopping channels on sky, i dont usually buy anything off the tv but i gave this one a try.
Since getting it 4 months ago i use it every day! it has saved me lots of money on electric as it heats up instantly, no waiting!
I can now make loads of batches of food for freezing in no time at all, i would recommend one to any money saver!!:money:

I've got no blender, breadmaker or dishwasher. I guess the microwave is the most important thing - I can always boil water on the hob if the kettle packs up  Digi scales are good especially as we're doing SW.

Discounting the obvious microwave, toaster & kettle, my little electronic "add & weigh" scales are well used for portion control, both for the sake of my waistline and pocket.

My next gadget will be a hand blender, stick blender, call it what you will, with a little food processor/chopper attachment. When I was married, it was the only gadget that was actually used on a regular basis, and I have dishes that I used to make with it that I would like to make again.

Got to be the breadmaker for me too. Much prefer homemade bread to any bought in the shops but its not so easy for me to knead by hand. The BM is amazing! :-))

Can I ask if anyone knows if wooden chopping boards are better for knives since we're talking about them? I think they get really blunt on my glass one, but I like that it's easy to clean. (We don't eat meat or fish. I don't know if that makes a difference.)

As you're not using them for raw meat or fish, then wooden ones are probably OK. Strictly speaking, wooden boards should only be used for bread & dairy products.

I have two "Legitim" plastic ones from Ikea. A big red one (£1.29) for raw meat & fish, and a big and little white one (£1.39 the pair) for everything else.

The white pair might be worth a try. They are kind to your knives, but will get cut up eventually. However, at those prices, replacing them isn't going to break the bank.

Wooden boards are much kinder to your knives and are much safer to work with. Chopping on glass is quite slippery and knives can slip.

If you are worried by cross contamination, plastic is the next best thing because they are easier to clean and can go into dishwashers.

My personal choice is a wooden block and everything is cut on it. Not what everyone approves of but we arent dead yet :D
