BT broadband bill £202

Just got a bill from BT for BT Total Broadband Option 1- £202.

My last bill was £50.34

The bill is made up of £52.20 for rental and £150 for usage - unitemised.

I am not inclined to pay it, any advice how to proceed?

As post #2 suggests find out why 1st and then decide your next course of action, for all you know somebody may have been making high rate phone calls from the line.

I get a separate phone bill and broadband bill.

It clearly states 'Broadband usage £150'.

It's precisely £150 so I guess they've just charged me the maximum with no warning.
  • Well, they think you owe it. You need to find out why.

I called them and they said I used 45GB in February, 75GB in March, 120GB in April and 80GB in May. However I was charged nothing previously.

They said I was emailed to an email address that I've never accessed (@btinternet.com address) even though I receive my bills by post.

I have called to cancel my phone line + broadband, they don't seem to care, they can sue me if they wish, I'm not paying otherwise.

They'll just pass it on to a debt collection agency. At least these days that doesn't often impact your ability to walk.

You need to check your emails more often. It's part of the T's and C's that you check your emails. Your limit is 10GB per month and you have gone over the limit. You may not have exceeded the limit in the past but they will charge you £5 per 5GB from the second month onwards. That adds up £150 for the 3 months. You can ring them and change to Broadband Option 3 if Option 1 is not good.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

You cannot simply walk away from a debt because you don't feel inclined to pay for it. You entered into a contract with BT and you should honour it. Before taking any drastic measures why don't you put a little more time and effort into finding out why you have been downloading so much over these months because it won't matter which internet provider you switch to, there is clearly a data usage issue at your house.

How many people live in your home and have access to the internet? 120GB in one month is far too high for casual surfing of the net. It is likely that a) someone is downloading large files which could include legal/illegal software, games, videos, albums and the rest or b) you have a virus. Walking away from your debt with BT won't resolve any of these issues, it simply creates another one.

Get your head out of the sand, get your finger out and get in touch with BT again. Defaults on contracts do your credit rating no good.

I usual be on 02 basic package with 20GB and when I was getting close to my limit 02 told me so that I did not go over. I changed to 02 all rounder package which has 100Gb limit which is more suitable for me.

Did BT not let you know when you were getting close to your limit and can you log into your account and monitor your limit ?
