At the moment I've merely cancelled my service following the (unpaid) bill dated 30th June, I'm not sure how long they will take with this - I'm going away for two months on Sunday.

BT will record late payments on your credit file at first and when it get to 6 late payments then they will default you on the credit file which will stay on for six years from the date of the default.

Do you really imagine that you can get away with that?

You may have loads of money to fight BT with but that does not put you in the right and, if you fight it and it goes to court, the case will go against you - however much money you have (and you'll have considerably less then, once the legal establishment have got hold of you.)

You just can't walk away from contracts and expect the other party to roll over and let you get away with it. If it was possible to do that, we'd all run up bills like mad, complain that it was unfair and then walk away laughing.

You're complaining because you didn't read the small print in the BT contract - a common problem these days it seems, skimming through dozens of similar posts on this board ranging from insurance contracts, no-frill flights and interest-free furniture deals.

Unfortunately for you, the ones where the OP comes back and says "I won" are extremely difficult to find.

That's definitely not right. I don't have a credit account with them for any payments to be late. Otherwise it would show on my credit record for BT:

    0 0 0 0 0 0 0

    etc.

But there is nothing for BT on my credit record at all.

Someone says they can record a default on the debt, ok that might be true, though I'd like to understand the legal basis for it, but short of default there is no 'late payment' here.

If I was the OP my main concern would be why my download limit was being smashed every single month by a huge margin, then change to an unlimited package to prevent it happening again.

Or is that too easy? lol

They offered to switch me, I don't however see that it's reasonable to subject me to a £150 penalty when I wasn't made aware of this.

I actually had to complain to the chief executive 3 years ago when I signed up to BT because the service was so bad, like I said I'm well rid.

Please don't waste any more time arguing with this muppet. The debt is entirely down to their own stupidity as they ignored warning e-mails!

I have a BT phone account, they email my bills to my @yahoo.com email address. The broadband account on the same line is paper billing and as far I am aware they hbave never told me that in addition to my paper bills they would also send billing information to an email address I've never logged into and have no reason to use given my yahoo plus subscription and the fact that ISP email accounts are useless when you change ISP.
I had no reason to suppose anything was wrong, there was no note on my last bill, nothing.

Amazing how somebody can use the id "thelawnet" and claim knowledge of whether or not a BT debt will affect their credit ratig or can be collected yet didn't bother reading the T&C of the BT broadband contract.

Sorry in my post I should have put miss payments not late payments I was going to edit it. The late payments does not apply because you said that you are not going to pay the bill at all.

I agree with you that BT do not report at the moment on your credit if your account is good order. However if there are miss payments then they are within their legal rights to report on your credit files as 123456 and when it get to 6 they will default you.

If you contract the Equifax which is the credit reference agency that BT uses they will confirm this to you.

There is a credit agreement with BT because you agreed to take out a two contracts with them for your phone and your broadband for minimum terms.

If the service was so bad why did stay with them for three years because the broadband contracts are only 18 months long so you must have been happy with the service to renew it.
