The secret to the cheap rice is to wash it first, then boil it in loads of water [NOT the 'just enough water' method] and more scummy stuff comes out - then when it is getting cooked, boil another whole kettle of water and drain the cooked rice into a sieve, pour through with a whole kettle of boiling water. All the scummy stuff gets washed away. Drain. Eat.
Then it tastes perfect.0 -
Hi Batgirl21
I don't really do weights and measures when I'm cooking, but to give you an idea, there's enough in a 500g tub of natural yogurt to make about 4 pizza bases. Obviously you can scale this down for smaller quantities.
First oil some non stick trays - very important to stop it sticking - and if you do this first it saves having to wash your hands midway through.
Mix yogurt with enough flour and a good pinch of salt to make a dough , not too sticky mind, and then divide into 4 tennis ball sized lumps. (If you need a little extra moisture you can add a drop of milk). Place on your trays, put some flour on the top and then flatten it out onto the base using your fingers and the heel of your hand. Top as you like - the Lutzi special is tomatoes, German salami, mushrooms, red peppers, onions, cheese and Itallian herbs, but you'll have your own favorites. Bake at around 180 to 190 degrees C until it looks done - if it's undercooked it will stick.
When it comes to getting it off the trays I've found getting a fish slice uder the edge them working round in a circular movement is best, but it gets better with practice!
This freezes well, so I've found poppping a couple of good slices in the freezer for DD's lunch when I've run out of other stuff can be helpful - it's good cold. Also good for school holiday picnics, and the kids can help you make it first!
(Also, if you get mushrooms and peppers reduced you can chop them up and bung them in the freezer, then they're there ready when you want to make this. Ditto half onions you have left over from making something else).
Hope that helps!Hope is not a strategy.0 -
While I'm in a cooking mood.... Somebody mentioned the value tinned potatoes. These are a critical ingredient in the Lutzi warm salad.
Slice longways and fry in a little olive oil with sliced onions, a little garlic if you like, chopped fresh tomatoes ( or cherry toms if you have some), a little chopped bacon or salami and some sliced mushrooms.
While they are frying put some mixed salad leaves in a dish, add some chopped feta or (value) mozzarella and drizzle with balsalmic vinegar and a little oil. Add the cooked ingredients, toss and serve immediately. This is a great recipe for friend or family get togethers and always goes down a storm. You can cook the stuff in advance, then just quickly reheat in the mocrowave and add to the leaves last minute, so it's a nice easy dish to do.Hope is not a strategy.0 -
I happened to find myself in Sainsburys yesterday, and have to say they are actually better for one or two of the value things. Their value mashed potato is 20p for 250g - Mr T has slashed the size of his packets to 120g for the same price, cheeky so and so. Maeks me so mad when they assume we are stupid and won't notice.
I also like their Basics washing powder - £1.75 for a big box, and their tomato ketchup is a steal at 22p for a large bottle.Hope is not a strategy.0 -
Lutzi, you have come up with great ideas for snazzing up value ingredients!
Anyone else got any 'posh nosh' recipes or ideas to spruce up 'Tesco Value' into something resembling 'Tesco Finest'?

Not a "Finest" idea, but a very quick supper dish for the kids when they are hungry is my late mother's "Bean Dish"!
Put a tin of (Value, natch) beans into an ovenproof dish and them a tin of (you guessed it, Value) tomatoes, and heat up in the microwave. Make up some Value mash and put on the top, then you can top that with some (Value) grated cheese and a sliced tomato if you have them handy. Brown under the grill till golden. Very quick to make and does actually have a bit of nutritional value.Hope is not a strategy.0 -
Looks like the baby bath available online tonight - do you think I'll get 40 tomorrow??? For £2!!Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day. -- Sally Koch0

Quick 'Value' Roasted Vegetable Lasagna. I make a really good copy of the Tesco Finest sweet potato and spinach lasagna with Tesco value ingredients and 'whoopsie' veg. If I get a load of good vegetables reduced to clear, I'll cook a few trays of roasted veg and freeze them (just chopped up and drizzled with olive oil and herbs and a few cloves of garlic and roasted for 45 mins in the oven). If I've got time i'll make a 'proper lasagna' with the veg and make a bechamel sauce (with value flour and butter, obv!) and a tomato sauce with the roasted veg. But if I'm in a hurry, i'll do my 'cheats' version:
Cook some tesco value lasagna sheets until al dente, then in a large ovenproof dish make a layer of lasagna, then roasted veg and then a layer of the 20p tomato and herb pasta sauce. Repeat the layers and then top with a mixture of whisked together value natural yog, 2 value eggs and a couple of handfuls of grated cheese. Cook for about 45 mins in the oven until brown and bubbly. It is LUSH, it's nicer when I make my own pasta sauce and bechamel, but the cheats version can be thrown together in no time from basic store cupboard and fridge ingredients.
You can also change the filling depending whats on special offer or whoopsied, versions I've made in the past are roasted red pepper lasagna, spinach and mushroom lasagna and when we've been really skint, baked bean lasagna (nicer than it sounds!)0
