Teachers please - Y4 expected SATS levels

Hello,
I know I'm probably asking a difficult question with so many variables but... Could any teachers please tell me what SATS levels they would expect an "average" child to achieve by the end of Year 4 and what a "bright" child would be expected to achieve by the end of Y4.
I have my child's SATS results after their end of year testing & I don't understand what they are supposed to tell me. I also doubt I'd be given an accurate picture if I asked the class teacher. I suspect I'd be told my child is fine (I suspect progress has been close to non-existent). I'm not going to complain or anything - I would just like to feel either reassured or know I need to keep a close eye on progress as my child moves into Y5. If you want the actual SATs levels I would PM them.
Thanks in advance.

Hi.
At the end of year 6 an average child should achieve a 4b and a 'bright' child should achieve a 5b.
Can I ask what levels your child has received this will help to give you a more clearer answer.0 -
I'd ask the teacher OP - you are "suspecting" and assuming things.
In my DD's school I've had to ask almost every year about the KS levels she's at because there are no SATS in Scotland where I was educated, so the levels on her report cards are like double dutch to me. They record the results of various spot tests on literacy and numeracy through the year in a book for each child here, which you can be shown if you ask the teacher.0 -
hi just had my daughters report and its on there for the average child to be at the end of year:
yr2 =2b
yr3 =2a
yr4 =3b
yr5 =4c
yr6 =4b0 -

These levels indicate that your school only expects children to make one sub-level of progress in Year 3 (from an average 2a to a 3c). This is not the same for all schools, many of whom will expect 2 sublevels and some even more.
It's not worth asking what level your child is working at unless the levels mean something to you. Far better to ask if they have made average progress, or lower than expected progress, this year.
If they have made less than 2 sub-levels since their starting point at the beginning of Year 4, then they will need a close eye in Year 5.
Additionally, the child's SAT level isn't the main guide to their actual level. You should have a teacher assessment level for that, which won't necessarily be the same thing as SATs results are only one way that we assess how the children are doing.0 -
Hi, Milliebear is correct. The 'average' attainment is 3B at the end of Year 4, so 'above average' is 3A and 'well above average' is 4C or higher.
However, please bear in mind that SATs show just how well your child can perform in tests, and lots of young children just don't cope well in test situations, even though it's something they will of course have to learn to cope with. There is often a discrepancy between SAT levels and my own teacher assessment of the child.
Also bear in mind that children have years when they make lots of progress (2 sublevels) and other years when they make less progress (1 sublevel), This is not a reflection on the teacher's ability or how much effort the child has put in a lot of the time, but just normal fluctuation. The main thing is that the child makes steady progress overall and from end of Y2 to end of Y6 6 sublevels should be made to stay on 'target' progress.Yesterday is today's memories, tomorrow is today's dreams0 -
I would say that in my Year 4 class I would be perfectly happy with anyone who achieved a level 3, although I would hope to give anyone with 3C a bit of extra help in the next year. Level 2 of any kind would mean I would be slightly concerned, although not overly with a 2A. Is the result from a test or Teacher assessment? We don't test anymore as we found it was often very different from what we would assess the children as.0

We do teacher assessment and test - if the scores differ greatly it shows that help is needed in test situations, or, that something you believed to be embedded in terms of learning wasn't.
We work to (and are an apirational school);
y6 - 4b
y5 - 3a
y4 - 3b
y3 - 2a
y2 - 2b
y1 - 1a
This roughly allows for 2 sub levels progress per year with a couple of slip ups. PM me if you need more info

my son's school expect them to progress 2 sub levels a year and achieve 4b by end year 6 - however many get 5s.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

I teach year 5 and have just been assessing all of the data of the current year 4s that I will be inheriting in September. I teach bottom maths and top literacy. The maths group I am getting ranges from 2B to 3C (with a couple of SEN children on 1) and my literacy group ranges from 3C to 4C. That is about the same as I inherited last year and those children have just completed had their sat results and 96% got level 4/5 in maths and 93% level 4/5 in literacy. We expect 2-sub levels progress a year. This is a minimum and we investigate potential reasons why children who have not made 2 sub levels progress a year haven't done so.
I wouldn't worry too much about your child's results at the end of year 4 but feel free to PM me their levels and I will give you more info.0
