  • the rule of thumb for litter trays is to have one per cat plus one

make sure they are not placed near a window/walkway/or there food/water

a majority of cats do not like covered trays-as they cannot stretch properly to get in position
what kind of substrate are you using, they best ones i am told are sandy ones. so they are soft on there feet

I agree with waterfalls, you have not got enough litter trays, you need at least one for each cat, although both my Bengals were alright sharing their one and they love the covered trays thank god, no mess, but some don't.

When you get a second tray put her scent around and inside it by rubbing a towel on her then the tray, hope you get it sorted.

I did have more than one tray but the other cats just went in them both, and the cat that has the problem continued doing what she is doing now.

Have you tried using 2 trays - one with litter and one with newspaper?
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
  • The mother cat & 2 of the kittens use the litter tray fine, one of the kittens just dosen't use the tray at all, makes no effort to use it. I have tried different litters and now bought a hooded tray.. Hoping the fact that he's hidden,. might encourage him to use the tray.

Sometimes cat's don't like the feeling of litter under their paws....you could try a litter tray lined with newspaper as mentioned or shredded paper or sand as it is nice and soft and fine.

Litter training has to be one of the most fustrating things of owning a cat.

Definately get at least three trays and keep popping the kitten in a nice quiet tray in a secluded corner everytime it looks like it is going to go to the toilet, sounds like the kitten has perhaps been trained on paper and you having it down the kitten is going back to using it as that's what it did when it was learning(do you know if it was trained on paper). If so you might have to either remove the paper or have a litter tray that is newspaper.

I currently have three cats whohave a large litter tray between them. My first cat is very good and always uses the litter tray and buries it afterwards.

My second cat we had gotten very young and despite being told she was litter trained she would go in the corners of the room. We partially solved this by moving the litter tray to a corner, but it has to be in a big carboard box because she would not go in the actual litter. She mostly goes on the newspaper in the cardboard box that has the litter tray in, but about once a week will go outside of the box in the same area.

I now have a new little kitten who used to use the litter but has now started to go on the newspaper too!

Has anyone any suggestions as to how to get the second one to go in the litter? Ive tried everything i can think of.

I must ask because it was on my mind yesterday because of another thread, but you do clean the trays out at least twice a day don't you because a dirty litter tray can encourage cats do go elsewhere because cats are very clean animals and don't like dirty trays?
  • try putting some soil in one of the trays - some cats prefer it. If it works you can gradually wean them off it by slowly introducing a bit of litter to the tray, and increasing the amount.

agree that you need one tray per cat, pus one extra. also to try newspaper if your cat seems to prefer that.
I can't think of anything interesting to write here.........

I agree about Asda's cheapo litter being rubbish.

I use Morrison's own brand cheapo stuff, and it's fine. I wouldn't want to spend anymore than i already do on litter, i buy cheapo toilet paper for the humans so i'm not about to pay out silly prices for litter! :D

I did once buy a weird litter which came in a box, same size as a cereal box and it looked like little polystyrene balls, it absorbed the wee v.good, but as you can imagine, the little white balls were EVERYWHERE!

Wow!! How have you managed to integrate them all??

they have a few issues sometimes, lol, but if one goes after another i just have to stand up and they all run,:rotfl:
they are all very good really, we have one old one who is naughty, but as he pees everywhere etc, he has his own cage, so he cant beat anyone up, or pee everywhere, funny thing is, we have an old lady cat who bosses him around,
they all get on very well, think we are quite lucky,
the young ones,( three ferals, one part wild cat ,lol, and my two, all about 2 years now) they all play fight etc, when they have a mad half hour, you really know about it,
our two maine coons are quite quiet, and prob wander what they have done to deserve being surrounded by moggies,:rotfl:
and the dogs love them all,
THANKS to everyone who posts competitions. you are all :A.
