I use any old litter, Aldi's litter at the moment, but have a tray with a domed cover (from argos), this greatly reduces the mess from the litter. The only time I've noticed odour is when I used catsan litter.

I use the one that is pellets and wood coloured (which has a pine fragrance) this doesn't seem to smell as much as normal litter, it is fairly easily vaccummed up.
Have used crystals in the past, and they are very good.

I don't like the clay looking stuff, it seems to keep a smell and is harder to clean up.
  • I have just read Cat Confidential & it said in there the wood pellets can hurt the kitties feet & often ends up with a problem with them not wanting to use the tray. Just something to bear in mind, i guess they all have pros & cons.

I use litter freshner with mine, "spring fresh" apparently.
  • My resident kittie has a hooded litter tray & I use the pink litter from Pets at Home. However, I have recently aquired a mother kittie & her 3 adorable lil ones & they are going through litter like it's going outta fashion.

Bought a clay one from Pets at Home, which claimed it was "Clean 'n' Tidy" amongst other things. How mis-guided I was. It's horrid stuff; I have cat paw prints everywhere now and it's a nitemare to sweep up.

So, needed recommendations in order to achieve a satisfactory result :D I will give your recommendations a go
  • i use the tesco cheap stuff, we have 13 cats, rescues mostly, 6 ferals, that we fostered and ended up not so feral, the litter works for us
my cats play fetch too, great fun, cept when its early in the morning and one puts toy on my face, then taps me, mine (two)are rescue moggies, my horse plays fetch also,

Wow!! How have you managed to integrate them all??

I use wilkinsons clumping litter £1.79 for 10 litres i think, lasts about 2 weeks, i do keep the tray quite full though & empty it as soon as hes been or as soon as im home.
Quite like the sound of the crystals HypnoNu, how much are they? Dont know if Tigger will like them & with the clumping litter I like being able to get rid of the wee easily!

Hi Princess kate, the Crystals are around £3.29 for a bag that last a month, so they're not the cheapest option but they are worth every penny, we never have to scoop the tray for wee because the crystal abdsorb and neutralise it all, and they change colour over the month so when they need changing it's more obvious because they've gona mostly pale yellow rather than white, but the best thing about them by far is tha lack of smell, I'm so apranoid about the cat wee smell with indoor cats but you'd never know with the crystals!

I use bob martins recycled paper litter. Generaly its very good with very little smell but it does need changing at least once a week.

I've used various kinds of litter,I found the paper varitety awful, i used the co-op brand and it just turned to mush and the cats got it stuck to their paws and didn't like it at all!

I'm now using Tesco's premium lightweight litter which is very good, and is quite absorbant. I do have to hoover around the area regularly tho because it's so light. I've used Tesco's value litter before, it was okay but heavy and not quite as good as the premium. The Tesco Anti-bacterial stuff is good too but a little more expensive.

I currently have three cats whohave a large litter tray between them. My first cat is very good and always uses the litter tray and buries it afterwards.

My second cat we had gotten very young and despite being told she was litter trained she would go in the corners of the room. We partially solved this by moving the litter tray to a corner, but it has to be in a big carboard box because she would not go in the actual litter. She mostly goes on the newspaper in the cardboard box that has the litter tray in, but about once a week will go outside of the box in the same area.

I now have a new little kitten who used to use the litter but has now started to go on the newspaper too!

Has anyone any suggestions as to how to get the second one to go in the litter? Ive tried everything i can think of.

We have 2 indoor cats and use Bob martin litter crystals and i don't think we'd ever go back to using any other kind of litter, one bag last's a month in the tray, you just remove solids and the cystals asbsorb all the urine and there's no smell whatsoever, in fact people who've come into the house comment on how they never even noticed that they were sat next to the litter tray....and there's no dusty tracks left coming in and out of the tray...
It's brilliant!! The only downside it if you come downstairs barefoot and tread on a stray crystal it hurts like hell!!!

When Ted was an indoor cat that was all I ever used.

Now I've got a kitten I'm buying it again. I bought one from Asda that comes in a roll/bag that folds out into the tray & to remove you just pick it all up pull the stings & it turns into a bag.

But next bag, I will go back to the crystals.
