My mother had an indoor cat and just had a small handful in the bottom of the tray which was changed frequently I think it lasted ages and was the wood pellet stuff. If the cat had just done a poop (ie not wet) then it was normaly just fished out and disposed of. Of course two boys might be a bigger problem but the more you have in the more that will be soiled and wasted.

We use the wood pellets for our house bunny's litter tray.

Cost effective, dust free, easy to clean up, easy to identify 'dirty' and 'wet' bits, lasts for ages, locks in smells. Well worth a try. Tesco do one and it's also in Pets At Home but we get huge bags from a local country and pets supplies store place.

Would recommend to anyone for any animal!

Have you thought about a tray with a flap? ours was dead cheap from Argash (Argos) and is grey and white - looks quite smart, plus it holds any smells for a couple of hours until you get a minute to pick them out! Comes with a scoop too.

If they didn't exist I wouldn't have got my two - as I live in a flat with no garden.
  • I use Litter Purrfect from Costco. It costs about £7.00 for 13.6kg, i've just had a look and it says it is 100% clay and 99% dust free, it also has lemon grass and baking soda in it. I can strongly recommend it, it is really fine and doesn't smell at all and the wee's clump into hard lumps, so as long as you scoop religiously it lasts about a week in the tray and I get about 4 or 5 trays per carton of litter. One of my cats has dermatitis and this is the only litter that doesn't cause a flare up, he used to have steroids to control it until we changed the litter and realised that was the problem.

We use Tesco value cat litter - he's an old house trained cat who chooses to save himself for the litter tray - even if he's been outside ALL day!

Another vote for Tescos Valu here - it's much better than their lightweight version. It absorbs well, makes little dust, it's not tiny pellets so if any does escape the litter tray it's easy to clean up.

The 1 tray was changed daily up to the time the 2 kittens started going outside and now is changed every-other-day as the old boy doesn't like to go out in the cold! (roll on the summer when I can get rid of the tray!)

    We buy about 3 x 10L bags a month - total cost £3.48
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
  • I use flushable litters, there are 3 I'm aware of and they meet all of your criteria except the tracking one, only one of the three doesn't track.

This is the one that doesn't track:

But because the pieces are bigger it is slightly less good at clumping

This one clumps brilliantly but does find its way on to the landing (tray is in bathroom). On the other hand Pets At Home sell it so we can buy it locally:

In both cases a 10 litre bag lasts us at least a month (single cat, always goes indoors). You just scoop out what has been used and keep the rest of the litter in there, probably for two weeks but personally I like to wash out the actual tray once a week.

The third one is called World's Best Cat Litter, but it seems pretty much the same as the second one and it's more expensive.

I do that, and use the wood pellets stuff - only have one cat that uses the tray, and a bag costing £3.70 ish will last just over a week...

Also great at eliminating smells, and no tracking that I have experienced.

Tesco value is also good, but morrisons value is the pits, and turns into a browny grey sludge when they do a wee in it _pale_
I can't think of anything interesting to write here.........
