I have recently started using wood pellets for our cats as it was on offer in Wilkinsons. When it gets dirty, it doesn't smell so that's a plus. The only negative is that the kitten likes to go for the other one and not really cover it! Lovely!

We have used the Silica type litter in the last week or so to try it and both cats like it. We are spending so much money on litter at the moment as the kitten cannot go out. Roll on September when he gets done and he can go outside ! :D.

Wood pellets can be too large for a kitten's small and sensitive paws, bear in mind they would use sand in the wild.

    If I wasn't a lazy so-and-so I would try Easi-Bed : 20kg @ £7.49
(plus p&p £4.95 if you bought it online ... 3% cashback through Quidco)
I think you can get it through most stores that sell equine products - though I wouldn't trust the stockists list - phone ahead.
First had never heard of it (garden centre), second could order it in for next day and third had it in stock.
It's about 32"/82cms high, but quite compact: 14"x10" or 36x26cms.
    You can store it outside.

Urine runs straight through and you just collect solids from the top layers.
You might want to line your tray because it will be very wet underneath. (I don't)
For my rabbit, I keep the tray tilted slightly so that it runs to the back - away from the front where she likes to sit and munch.
I just scrape away the dry litter on top ... remove the soiled ... wipe that section of tray clean (white vinegar) and replace with dry litter.
I put fresh litter in the area that stays clean.

When I was really ill, I just kept topping it up - no smell at all.
When I dug down to clean it... then I discovered the pong - quickly sorted though.
Sometimes I just threw all the tray contents out - you get a lot for your money.

I would hope (if you make it deep) that the urine soaked litter at the bottom will be safe from your cat's digging; and that the smell of buried solids would be locked in under the top layer.
(I think they tend to pee and poo in different sections of the tray.)
You can also get easibed plus, which discourages flies.

NB: I have not tried this with a cat - I would if I was desperate and had run out of World's Best Litter - easiest, cleanest and most economical for me - IMHO.

I think WBL could suit you, because you intend to clean frequently. That way there is no waste and it lasts for ages.
When you first fill your tray you think  (the cost) but after the initial outlay you don't have to buy nearly so much - I think it works out cheaper.

Must admit - I now use Extra Strength WBL (green bag) because it makes really hard clumps. (Should let clumps "rest" for 30 mins before removing.)
Costs slightly more, but IMHO lasts even longer.
I didn't like the smell when I opened the bag, but it's fine in the tray.

    Benefits of Easi-bed
"It does drain away from the top ... it's given me the idea to try cat litter at the bottom, where it needs to be absorbent and a layer of Easibed on top .. where it will drain away from..." Rabbit Forum

Use Quidco. Sometimes is cheapest here (or 7.5 kg at Zooplus)
I always invest in 2 x 15kg bags at Zooplus - cheapest option and lasts ages; but you need to find space to store it.

ps - One day I will read this thread...
    mummyroysof3 - if you've already tried WBL - sorry! :o
