Cheapest is online - zooplus I use mostly.

Supermarkets: Liddles & Aldies - v good quality clumping (fullers earth I believe) about 10kg for £1.50 or so.
  • I've tried Tesco Value litter but find it's a bit powdery so my cat leaves whitish footprints around the house when he's been in his tray. The paper-based litter is cleaner, less smelly and much lighter (both for carrying home and taking out to the bin after use), but it costs more.

Heavy litter does seem to absorb smells better btw. However you could mix it with wood chip (ie 1/2 fullers earth & 1/2 wood chip or paper - tesco & Asda do own brand cheap) & just plan ahead.

Ive tried looking on here as I thought I remembered seeing a similar thread not too long ago.

What does everyone use for there little furry friends?

I have one cat who will go in the tray religiously and one who will go once and even if I clean it straight after, will go for number twos in the tray but number ones on my hardwood floor!

I used Asda Tiger Litter, and have just tried Bob Martin Wood Pellets this week with the same problem.

    Any ideas?

not sure what you could do, our lot (includes many fostered ferals that decided to be cuddly house cats most of the time) use tesco and asda cheap stuff, and is fine. one feral though does miss the tray, ao we have paper all round, and a huge tray helped. one of the very wild ones used a sofa thats in their room, thankfully she copied the rest in end though,
my cat who is no longer with me used to like using plastic bags on the floor, quite strange. sorry not helpful. will have a think
THANKS to everyone who posts competitions. you are all :A.

Not very practical, but have you tried using 2 trays? I keep one in the house for "emergencies", overnight and I know one of my cats hates using the same one twice! When he was younger he got cystitis after refusing to use a tray he'd previously soiled.

If you have more than one cat, they often don't like using a tray another cat has already used - it's marked out as the other cat's territory.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.
  • We used Catsan. We have two boys, who are obsessed with being clean. With one of them, we have to empty it when he's been otherwise he won't leave it alone.

We find Catsan keeps the smell away, but it does seem to get stuck in their paws every now and then, so they scrape it on the floor! lol!

I think it's down to the cats tbh, they are very clean and I don't think a different litter will make them use a litter that's already been used!

i use cheap old 'Thomas' cat litter - it is dusty though. my cat doesn't seem bothered as to what is in his tray...I have tried Schweat Scoop, those pearl things, pellets, Cat San...but always come back to Thomas as my local shop sells it, and apart from being dusty, it works.
  • I have two cats & two covered litter trays. I find that the better the clumping/odour control of the litter the less fussy the cats are about re-using the litter box. I also 90% dry feed & clean the trays every other day - without `accidents' or nasty niffs - wet feeding does require much more frequent cleaning out of waste matter.

I try to save money on mine when I can & sometimes mix 50/50 cheap expensive. I like the talc scented clumping ones that Zoo plus sell but it is quite expensive so bulk buy. Am planning to buy litter & food next time to save on delivery costs (only thing is alot of online suppliers do not stock a fulll range of Burns cat food). Worlds best & Otto Plus are both good clumping litters & more environmentally friendly too.

Cheap: I get Liddles &/or Aldies fullers Earth (approx £1.60 for 10 kg).

    sometimes I mix with paper recycled stuff - Asda/Bob Martin/Morrisons/Tesco - I don't have supermarket loyalty!

Lastly neither cat likes the `long-lasting' stuff that is said to last for a month - where manufacturers state that you just take out the `soilids': it's probably full of chemicals. They will use it for a while & then `accidents' occur long before the stated time has expired.

my newly adopted cat will do his number ones in the tray but will hang his bum over the side and do his numbers two's over the edge! he also seems to prefer my existing cat's tray to his own - same litter, but the tray is just slightly larger. i am going to get him a larger tray today and if that doesn't work then i am thinking of getting a covered tray for him...but i bet he won't use it!
