  • I use the sainsburys ultra clumping litter for my cats and whilst it's way dearer i think it's well worth every penny. My problem is not having a sainsburys now that i've moved so we stock up when we visit my granparents.

We have two lovely kittens and have been using the Catsan hygenie litter - seems to absorbs smells well but is quite expensive at £4.18 per bag - we did try another one (Co-op own make) but it was disgusting - clumped together and stunk after just one day.

Does anyone else have any recommendations for anything cheaper (that works!)

I would recommend the LIDL'S one it's around £1.68 or something for a huge big bag.

What about chick crumb or layers pellets?

Chick crumb gets my vote every time.
  • Thanks for all your replies - we are on day 2 of the wood pellets - my two kittens seem to have more fun scooping them out of the litter tray and playing with them!

We have 2 kittens and a cat and use the wood pellets. We also have a covered cat loo as it cuts down on mess around the side of the litter tray, as they scrat the stuff all over the place.

I would also recommend wood pellets from pets at home about £8.49 for a big 30l bag and sometimes they do offers. Also join their mailing list and you get money off vouchers, often as good as £5 off a £20 spend.

However, after needing to do a home shop I got a substitution of Bio-catlit (sp?) which is recycled paper made into pellets and that is very good. If it is only soiled by wee you can put it in the compost bin if you have one whiche helps reduce the load on the bin!

I use the paper pellets, only problem is that they are very light and have a habit of going everywhere! but I put up with this for the sake of being green.
  • This may sound weird but when I went to a Siberian cat breeders home they told me they buy the huge sacks of chicken feed to use for litter, I couldnt smell anything and the bags last absolutely ages
  • Thanks for everyone's replies - I am definitely converted to wood pellets - I only put it the amount it said on the bag (which seemed very little) but after a whole week of 2 cats doing the business it had all turned to sawdust and still very little smell! Excellent stuff - and very economical too

    Hi,
If you've got a garden, you could try using good old fashioned soil in your cats' litter tray - It's less likely to be full of chemicals than some of the new-fangled scented litters and it's possibly cheaper than chips??
More natural for the cat too & might help when the time comes for them to learn to 'go' outside...

    Good luck!
