Not a good idea to use sawdust or woodshavings. it won't 'clump' like litter and as Walwin says, will create more mess.0

I have read thread which says about how good chick crumb is as cat litter. I was just wondering where I could get hold of some? They have the worlds best cat litter in pets at home but that is much more expensive.
I live in Norwich, does anyone know where I might get some. Also what is it like for stopping smells and things like that? Is it as good as normal cat litter?JeremyMarried 9th May 20090 -
You can get it at Jollyes petstore http://www.jollyes.co.uk/store_locator.htm The brand sold in Jollyes is Dodson & Horrell - here's a list of stockists for D&H in Norfolk http://www.dodsonandhorrell.com/uk/dh/stockist?national=89&commit=Search Not all of them sell the entire range of D&H products, the chick crumbs are in the countryside range.
There's other brands sold aswell - Allen and Page - links to stockists in Norwich....

Farmgate chick crumbs....

Smell wise it does just as good a job as other cat litters, I have hooded trays anyway so virtually no smells at all. The litter itself smells quite wheaty but it's not unpleasant and I guess WBCL smells the same just costs £36 for 15kg instead of £7 for 20kg! You need to have it quite deep (the same as WBCL), it clumps really well so is easy to scoop both liquids and solids!0 -
If you can get the BOCM (Farmgate range), depending on the deal the shop gets, it will more than likely be the cheapest... We currently sell our 20kg bags of BOCM FG chick crumbs for 6.60, although with the way the wheat prices are going up at the minute, the suppliers are going to have to pass that cost onto us.
People think I'm crazy when I recommend chick crumbs as cat litter lol, but my semi-longhair cat has no problems with it...In fact, I dont think he's even noticed it isnt WB!
(AFAIK the A&P range is organic and if its the same as their layers pellets, will be double the price as the non-organic stuff).
Oh, I havent seen another thread about chick crumbs, so apologies if I repeat anything, but the BOCM FG chick crumbs are a medicated feed, so require your name and address to be taken - nothing sinister and no affects on the cat either. We checked both with BOCM and 2 different vets.
I dont know if the D&H range have it in (I dont think they do) or the A&P.
Hope that helps0 -
I would like to try this but live in South East London. Where can I buy it/can I have it delivered?0

Have a look at the store locator links I put in my first post, just put in your postcode or location instead and they'll show stores near you....
This site delivers: http://www.countrywidefarmers.co.uk/pws/ProductDetails.ice?ProductID=1216 but unless you normally have your cat litter delivered it's going to work out more expensive than normal litter as delivery is £4.95.0 -
Hello,
just a word of advise for you newbie chick crumb experimenters. It doesnt do its job if your using only a bog standard litter tray, far from it, its rubbish. You must get a really deep (I use a covered one) tray and fill it with lots of litter. This way when the cat hasa wee it is absorbed by the litter and doesnt just sit on the bottom of the tray and spread out using tonnes of litter. The best way is to have a deep tray and then shake the trays and all the waste comes to the top and is easily scooped. You do not change a chick crumb tray as regularly as you do a normal litter tray, you scoop out the excess, saving you yet more and more money. You only need to change them fully every now and again. Please let me know if I can be of any help to anyone. We have been using this stuff for ages now and have made every conceivable experiment !!
Also, this stuff is flushable as is Worlds Best. You scoop out the wee and the poo daily and flush it down the toilet, saving you a load of room in your wheelie bin if you have a house full of cats like we do!!
Cheers

Hi
I just wanted to let people know about this amazing cat litter which I found in my local Pets at Home.
It clumps in a way which is just fabulous. I haven't had to do a thorough clean of the litter tray for a month. Any liquid, instead of sinking to the bottom and sticking to the tray like others, spreads out first before sinking so it never touches the bottom of the tray. Granted I have a large tray which is very deep so there's a thick layer of litter.
However, all solids and clumped liquids are flushed down the loo!! No smelly bin and no need for bin bags. Even the packaging that this litter comes in can be recycled.
Now, it is expensive but I bought 2 bags a month ago thinking that I'd have used both by now on my 3 indoor cats but I haven't even used one bag yet. There's an argument that says I'm saving money as I'm not spending extra on fuel to get the litter and I'm using less bin bags.
BTW - it's made from corn so is even suitable for kittens as it won't clog their bellies or cause them any harm at all if they decide to try eating it.

Hello,
I am hoping someone can help. I consider my self to be quite an experienced cat owner as I have had at least 10 cats, of which 5 I still have. But now I have hit a problem and realise that I have clearly been a very lucky cat owner up to now so only really have experience of good cats. I love my cats dearly and they all get on fantastically so I don't think any of them are distressed in any way but one of my girls has had a problem with going to the loo where she shouldn't since we have had her (1 year). She is a pedigree and came from the breeder with her brother and they were both litter trained. I think they were trained with paper based litter. The boy has never been a problem and has happily taken to using the wood based litter just like my other cats. But the girl just won't seem to use the litter trays.
We thought she was perhaps using them and having the occasional accident for a number 2 but then we discovered that the carpet by the front door was being widdled on. So we have recently changed the carpet to laminate and the problem seems to have been solved. Or so we thought.....
The number 2s were still happening and although it isn't ideal at least they can be cleaned up quite easily and we thought we would try uncovering one of the litter trays as I have heard that not all cats like enclosed trays, but that hasn't worked. We have now found that she is widdling on the carpet in our upstairs bathroom next to the litter trays (which is also where she does the number 2s. Again, it doesn't smell or show up ont he carpet which is why we hadn't noticed it sooner. Now obviously this isn't ideal, especially as we are going to need to start using that bathroom in a two months when we have our first child (we don't use that bathroom at the mo). So I thought maybe I would try some paper based cat litter to see if she is just funny about the litter or if she has a problem with litter trays generally, but the paper litter seems so expensive. Does anyone know where I can get some (ideally in a smallish pack just to try) that doesn't cost too much either? Or does anyone have any other ideas of how to stop her doing this?
I am getting desperate and went as far as to suggest to my husband that we should try to find a cat psychic who can talk to her to see whats wrong (there arer such people apparently!!)
I have rabbited on a bit haven't I?
Thanks if you got this far!

Just a thought. If you have a shreddar, shred some newspaper up and try that. That was you won't waste to much money if she is still the same. Please do not feed the Trolls!0
