The probe is recommended where the temp goes below -20c or above 40c. Using it in the shed with the probe outside is absolutely fine as well as using the sensor without the probe.

First of all ... many thanks to the OP... clever little gadget :T

Now...apologies if I'm being really thick but does the Sensor unit go inside or outside or either???? Can't quite figure it out! At the moment I've got the Sensor Probe thingy dangling out of the slightly open (brrr!) window and the Sensor Unit inside and everything seems to be set and working OK. If this is right I'm wondering how the devil to get the lead+probe thingy outside, on a permanent basis, without just dangling it out of the window!!! :o

I've just put the small sensor unit outside!!

Not put the probe on, I'm sure I read in the book you only need to do this if it goes below-20 or above+40 oC. It seems to be working okay, and has changed to rain, and temp correct.

Lol, read the manual again, It says...

'Put the metal casing outside and leave the Thermo Sensor Unit in an indoor area to avoid freezing up the battery when the outdoor temperature is below -20c.
Always use the temperature probe to sense the temperature when the temperature is between the following range:
    -50C~0C and +50C~+70C'

So, basically you should be using the Temperature probe with the Thermo Sensor Unit all the time, only keep the unit inside and leave the probe outside if you live in the North or South pole for example.

The unit is weather proof hence the rubber seal inside the battery compartment. I still put mine in my shed and poked the probe through a hole, not because of the chance of us getting any -20C type weather in England, but just in case it gets nicked lol.

I opened the window and put the probe outside then closed the window on the wire and it seems fine. I also did this with my Dad's one. I have Double glazing and my Dad has solid wood windows, both were fine with the wire outside. The small unit then sits on the windowsill.
Just run, run and keep on running!

Looks like the bigger one has been removed from the website too jeppy, so they may not be available anymore for internet reserving.

If its any help to anyone, I ntried to order one yesterday for my Dad as ours is great. Comet website would not show the item.
We went to the COMET locally (Northampton St James Retail) and the basket they were in on Christmas Eve was empty, asked the assistant who said they had all gone

When I went to collect mine from the Ruislip store there were loads (at least 10+) of the £4.99 ones on the shelf, and about 8+ of the £19.99 ones too. They were lying near the stacks of other discounted things, like mirror balls and disco balls (the ones with lights) and plasma disc things (where you touch the disc and the lightning goes to your fingertip). I was in silly gadget heaven, had to be dragged away with only a glitter ball....:rotfl:

The comet website had a lot of problems yesterday, they seem to have fixed it today. Type "weather" in the search box and the unit will come up.

Thanks Jay-Jay, I've now done this too. (Never thought of closing the window on the wire!! ) As you say it seems to work OK. I've now hung the sensor unit on the wall behind the curtain. Wish the weather symbol would change from 'rainy' - just the once -to prove it's working!!!
