I doubt it. Either way it would probably kill the batteries in no time.

Mine is forecasting rain for the first time (in Leeds). Let's see if it is correct :) BBC forecasts rain for tomorrow.

It should not make any difference to this as a 60kHz VLF (very low frequency) signal is used to broadcast the time. These frequencies are used to transmit signals to submarines all over the world.

From the 1st April 2007 the signal will come from Anthorn in Cumbria, when the radio station at Rugby will close down for good.

So have they closed the submariners 16kHz, run by BT?, that used to be at Anthorn or is the MSF an addition. Suppose the Rugby site will be valuable real estate tho. and nothing valuable at Anthorn other than sheep. ;)

BBC closed and sold off its Daventry short wave site to keep the licence fee down.

  • They do sem a bit funny about the radio time setting.
When I first switched it on it picked up the time in about 5mins, then son reset it and it wouldn't set the time again no matter how many times you pressed the button to request a sync. tested it with another radio clock alongside (which I also reset) and it still wouldn't pickup time (but other one did) but left it over night and it picks it up ok - odd

As far as I know the MSF transmitter will be the last to go from the Rugby radio station. Most of the other masts have been taken down and the land is already earmarked for development.

Perhaps it'll synchronise with time.windows.com like my computer does. I see there's still two weeks left to go to Christmas.

    Snap!!

My experience almost to the letter. I actually concluded that mine had gone faulty because when I brought it home 3 days ago it synced within 4 minutes in the afternoon. After that it wouldn't sync again even after leaving the batteries out for 1 hour. A different clock alongside it synced no problem. I even left it outside away from TV's and computers for a couple of hours. However, it has synced perfectly indoors for the last two nights.

    Very strange.

I couldn't sync mine manually but left it and it did it itself. I didn't set the time on mine manually either, so it was about 8 hours slow. It seemed to pick up the time signal once the displayed clock read 2.00am.

They had the same ones in Boots today half price at £15.
  • First of all ... many thanks to the OP... clever little gadget :T

Now...apologies if I'm being really thick but does the Sensor unit go inside or outside or either???? Can't quite figure it out! At the moment I've got the Sensor Probe thingy dangling out of the slightly open (brrr!) window and the Sensor Unit inside and everything seems to be set and working OK. If this is right I'm wondering how the devil to get the lead+probe thingy outside, on a permanent basis, without just dangling it out of the window!!! :o

I've just put the small sensor unit outside!!

Not put the probe on, I'm sure I read in the book you only need to do this if it goes below-20 or above+40 oC. It seems to be working okay, and has changed to rain, and temp correct.
