Now I like to be frugal but this is going too far
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15752918
I don't get it. So 3 slices of bread but one of them is toasted and season with salt and pepper. Why not have one slice of toast and some jam? Am I missing something? 3 slices of bread doesn't seem frugal to me...
Yay spiral. They're ok for the price aren't they? Will have a look at the lincolnshire one. Might be nice to make up and wrap in puff pastry like a big sausage roll

Just seen your other post. Aw don't give up. Why not give it another try but set a realistic limit, then maybe decrease it a little the week after...go on...go on...go on. (Now why did that pop into my head. Bless Father Ted)

I know a bakers in Glastonbury town that does the most amazing sos-mix sausage rolls... Never thought to try to make my own. Thanks! nom.
I literally laughed out loud at your father Ted comment!:rotfl::rotfl: I think my problem was id tried to budget realistically but then i'd had a few unexpected expenses, such as finding good Xmas gifts in charity shop and a few woopsies, and was afraid to go to the cash machine once I was low as I'd break my chalenge. Getting down to my 'last' 11p was quite scary. So I went to the cash machine on my way home from the coffee morning! Epic fail.Relax, Breathe, Love 2014 Challenges:Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger 23. Frugal Living Challenger. No buying cleaning products. I used MSE advice to reduce my car insurance from 550 to 325!! & paid it off in full!!!0 -

I bet though spiral that you spent less than you would have done anyway just because you were more mindful of what you were spending. And you're not really breaking a challenge if you're buying xmas presents that you need to buy anyway at a far less cost than you would have done. So really, when you look at it, your challenge actually worked because all we really need to do is buy what we are buying anyway, cheaper, and you did that, so your challenge was a success. :T See you just have to look at things in a slightly different way, just like I do
Also do what I did and get to the bank with a set amount of money and change it to £1 coins then you can take a few coins out daily with you.
Even though I've only got about £22 pound left, in £1 coins it looks a heck of a lot more than if it was in a tenner and two fives and it somehow makes me want to keep it longer. I stopped doing the money/grocery challenges on the other threads 'cos I just failed miserably, but this way, just doing it for myself seems to be working. touch wood...yep that's right, I'm tapping my headOfficial DFW Nerd Club Member no:219In the Court Of The Crimson KingI don't believe in the concept of hell, but if I did I would think of it as filled with people who were cruel to animals.Gary Larson0 -

Hi all
hope everyone had a good day.
I must say i am pleased with my house insurance for the next year, it dont start until dec 3rd but its all sorted out on direct debit, (no interest). £59 for the whole year.
found it on moneysupermarket.com.
was very happy as the previous company put my policy up to £94. wasnt happy with this as i have been with them for 7 years now and not had a claim with them. i think it went up by £24 in one year. the cheek of it haha. they have lost this customer.
anyway at least it is sorted. only down fall now is that i will have to make sure that i have an extra £4.82 in the bank on the 1st of every month. arrrgghhh another damn bill.
struggling with what i got already, however will keep smiling and being as frugal as i can.
was hoping my shopping was going to come under £10 again this week, but the list so far has already exceeded this and there dont seem to much in the way of food on there for me. think theres more for the cats lol.
will let you know how my shopping went.xx

dizzy_lizzie wrote: »Hiya Tumpty. I challenged myself to a spend of £50 for the week. That was for everything. I was using what we had in the freezer and storecupboards too. Changed £50 into one pound coins and split them into 7 bank bags, with a £1 left over. Anyway Im doing so well I'm just carrying on with it for now. I'm enjoying keeping my money in my purse for a change

What a great idea, we thought of doing something similar but just haven't got round to it yettumptyteapot wrote: »Next week I think we will be on wartime rations - my son is doing WW2 at school and I thought we'd try it for a week, substituting smoked salmon for bacon 'cos he doesn't eat meat and you can cook the same sort of things with smoked salmon. I found this list from here - http://1940sexperiment.wordpress.com/rationing-diet-sheets/ (which also has some great recipes)- Bacon & Ham 4 oz
- Meat to the value of 1 shilling and sixpence (around about 1/2 lb minced beef) (we will substitute fish for meat)
- Butter 2 oz
- Cheese 2 oz
- Margarine 4 oz
- Cooking fat 4 oz
- Milk 3 pints
- Sugar 8 oz
- Preserves 1 lb every 2 months
- Tea 2 oz
- Eggs 1 fresh egg per week
- Sweets/Candy 12 oz every 4 weeks
Would flour be limited? There wouldn't be any pasta, would there be rice? We have loads of potatos :-)
I remember when I was at school we had to watch a series on the war called How we used to live, it covered everything on the home front. I wonder if it is on the internet somewhere?? it was really interesting!
Must have been one of those bbc for schools programmes.
Will have a look when I get a min x

A quick :hello: to everyone! I'm briefly in for tea before going back to work this evening - boo. I'm still coughing, so I must remember to take my inhalers tonight and take it easy when I do get back in.
Hope everyone is well? I'll read properly when I get back xBe who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Talking of war time, I have just read the auto-biography of a working class lady born in the 1920s so it go all through the 2nd WW. It's amazing what they put up with, how little they had and they survived. It's called The House in South Road.
I have posted a parcel today, and bought a multi bag of crisps at the local shop because they were cheap and we needed crisps. Also made an lovely choc cake and banana and fruit cake and took them round to the pre-school committee meeting I have just been to.
Off to work in a minute, catch you all tomorrow xMum to 2 DSs, dog mum, wife full-time worker.
