You're right seriouslyfrugal. The emergency services must be in shock too. I know they're trained for things like this but until it happens...it puts a lot of things in perspective doesn't it?

Picked up a lovely little herb planter type thing at The Works today for £7, will be Mums Xmas presentHas been quite a frugal weekend - Mum paid to go to some fireworks last night and OH was here this weekend so we walked around the resevoir yesterday, gorgeous autumnal colours.
On a worse note, I have lost 4 of my friends this weekend - 1 passed away after a 'routine operation' to remove an abcess on her liver on Friday, and 3 died in the M5 crash on Friday night. My thoughts are with all their families.
So sorry to hear that, how awful.
I don't know what the etiquette is for this kind of post, I have pressed thanks but I don't mean thanks I want to say heartfelt sympathy. There should be a "bloody big hug, much love sent your way because you blinkin well deserve it" button next to the thanks button IMO xx0 -
Frugal soup question...
I have a gammon shank and have been soaking it in water to remove some of the saltiness. I want to make pea and ham soup with yellow split peas, but can't for the life of me remember how I made it last time. The peas have to be soaked for 24 hours, but I was thinking of cooking the ham in the slow cooker overnight with an onion and some veg stock. Would that work?
I'm really not very Delia and any advice received before I go to bed at 11 will be received with loads of gratitude!0 -
Ooh flying-fresian I've no idea but could you get an idea if you google it. I think there's virtually an answer to everything on there!
Good Luck

I made some the other week with a gammon shank, I didnt soak it first I gave it a 5 minute boil and then put it in clean water and put it in the slow cooker for 8 hours with some chopped onion (and a ham stock cube!!!) and some lentils and potato.
I never soak split peas or lentils, I understood it just had to be whole peas/lentils and beans.
Does this help

theres a recipe on there as well.
hope it tastes good0 -
Oh Blairweech, how awful!
Have just had a new pair of trainers delivered via Am*z*n. Should have been £54.99, got them for £14.99 plus a little bit of p&p, and I've got them on my feet already and they are SO comfortable!
My last pair are 4 or 5 years old, and still wearable to knock about in, but getting a bit scruffy. Had a look in some cheap shoe shops, but for what I was prepared to pay, what they had really did LOOK cheap.
These are lovely!
Now I must finish my handknitted socks to go with them!Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!0 -
So sorry to hear about your friends Blair ~ my thoughts are with you and all the families who are grieving

Ohhhh noooo Blairweech - what a horrendous weekend it must have been for you/other friends/family. The loss of a friend during "routine" surgery must have been such as shock and then with the crash as well:sad:. My deepest sympathies go out to everyone involved in / affected by that horrible crash. So sorry to hear this very sad news and can only offer a very poor (((hug)))
Fresian I know you've probably made the soup already ..... if you get stuck again may I suggest posting on the Old Style board - there are some very frugal people over there and they can make a meal out of nothing and honestly seem to know everything about cooking anything! (not suggesting anyone here isn't - but the OS board is busy and there's always someone around, thinking I'm digging a hole for myself here but hope you all KWIM). Hope the soup worked out OK!Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I've since boiled up the slow-cooker stock with a bag of yellow split peas and some of the leftover gammon and it certainly smells lovely; currently waiting for it to cool before I blitz it! I'll let you know if it's edible later on - I certainly hope so as there's a vat of it!
