Welcome Teenie beware its very addictive:) Ideas come from everywhere colours you might see in an advert, on some fabric n think ooooh that'd work on a cake or themes which are easily found online, or make it up as you go along:) You look like you are off to a cracking start well done. And DH getting on board. Think I've been doing it about 18months now (although I've baked since I was at school) and I've picked tools up little by little and have a nice little collection now- although there are LOADS on my wish list. I started off buying a cake smoother and a few colour pastes then added an item or two for the next cake etc. etc.
Wow Vikki-Louise I love your cake in a teacup:) have you made the teacup? Apologies that sounded silly but it looks so fab.
Thank you and welcome Estateprincess that is a good offer, the nozzles on there own would be more than that.
Violetta I've used - cant exactly remember its name!!) the tubes of ready made icing you get in the supermarket think its a silverspoon one. It looks like a large tube of toothpaste! It's ready mixed and not too wet and handy rather than making up royal icing etc. If you can make sense from that I hope it helps.
Littlebit I don't think people have any idea how much work and cost goes into a homemade cake to appreciate it:( But it's all practice isn't it gghhhrr.
On the other hand it made money for a good cause and otherwise would have been eaten! They must've thought it looked too good to eat when they decided to raffle it:) So it is a compliment. And stop being so hard on yourself please. On the subject of your wedding my DH and I went to the local registry office with his brother and my best friend cost us £12.50 and a pretty dress. Next week we celebrate our 27th anniversary:) and friends who had big big fancy wedding are all sadly divorced or remarried by now so you don't need to have a big do just marry cos you want to spend the rest of your life with DH the rest doesn't really matter:)
This is a long post your probably bored by now but here are last weekends creations.
I confess I didn't make the cup, it was such a quick and easy cake to make, I brought silicone cups from The Works and then they have plastic saucers to put the cups on once baked. I've fallen in love with an American ladies cakes, she bakes them in little glass jars, I'm sure you could bake in a real cup for a great lookBest wins in 2013 £200 and Mini iPad. 2014 no wins. 2015 2 nights 5* hotel with £300 vouchers plus £1150 Harrods gift card

Well done you Violetta. Did you get a pic of the finished masterpiece I'd love a peep:)
Awesome I just fiddle with the fondant until I'm happy with the shape. I think playing with my DGDs and their playdoh helps. The Oz cake was for my DS, DDiL and DGD1 who are emigrating in four weeks. They had a little get together and a curry so I thought I'd surprise them. Didn't realise it'd make me cry! Thought I was holding it together then the waiter brought out the cake with a gigantic sparkler in it and whooooosh I burst into tears. I'm so proud of them but going to miss them more than words can say:( -careful I'll start blubbering again! Part of my heart went into that cake with a special wish in the boomerang:) and yes I just rolled the icing big enough to cover the board and cake together. I kno this isn't the correct way but it's much easier.
Vikki-Louise I love the effect even if you didn't make it. I was looking at the pic on my phone and my eyes are getting older everyday. Think a trip to the works may follow shortly. Think they look brill:) so thank youThe secret of Christmas

Apologies for size of the pic, & it wouldn't let me add text to the picture. This was my 1st attempt at using fondant, my daughter was pleased with it so that's all that matters, cake was tasty too.Booo!!!0

My first post on here and I'm having problems adding a photo, so please excuse the link - I've added the photo to a site that I use for students completing business law.

This cake was a request by a friend at work as her birthday is on Friday and she's going to the opening ceremony. I don't usually do 'white' cakes, just flavoured (choc etc) and extravagant cheesecakes so I don't do fondant decorations apart from sometimes on Christmas cakes. This really is my worst effort to date, but hopefully it's edible if nothing else.
I'll post the next time I do a proper effort!0 -

Hi guys, wot an amazing thread. I'm planning my first two tiered cake. Question, what sort of board do I put the top tier on, to support it on the dowels? Would thick card suffice or do I need another cake board?
