Tesco ready to roll fondant is on offer £2.00 - Nettles I put a thin layer of buttercream or chocolate ganache then pop the rolled fondant onto. Works a treat:) The flowers on moosetastics giant cupcake look like rolled fondant too ( sure she'll be back shortly and let you now for defo)

Missed you Nat. Glad you had a good time and got a break:) Your gonna need all your energy for that list of orders:) Can't wait to see the pictures:)

7613362452_854a0c6fe3_m.jpg Ok so this is how it turned out, my first cake in the shape of something lol and this large, the black icing was so soft to work with but got there in the end found the cake a little dry, when i sampled the off cuts but apart from that they tasted ok, sorry about the pic im only 5'1 so trying to get an over head shot of the cake was like hover the camera over the top and hope you get one that looks decent :rotfl:i think looking at the pic the only thing i would change is make the white belly go up higher so the spacing between the beak and eyes isn't so much but from my short angle at the time it looked ok :D, thank you again nan for all your help it was much appreciated!

Thank you for the lovely comments everyone, Nettles, yes the flowers are ready to roll icing cut out with flower cutters. I usually do a "crumb coat" on my cakes, thats a thin layer of buttercream then you put the ready to roll icing on top. You can use apricot jam tho, you have to warm it so its more of a glaze than thick.

If you are just starting out, and want to really get into it, I would seriously check out Ebay for cutters and tools and things, they are so much cheaper than in the cake shops, and are the same thing. I've bought lots of mine from overseas (hong kong, malaysia) purely because they can be just over a pound for 4 cutters. They take a few weeks to come but it is worth waiting for.

Loving the spaghetti idea Nanamia, I'm gonna have to try that, looks fantastic! I made my own birthday cake too, its so sad isnt it?? LOL xx The little cupcake stand is from classikool, here's the link to the one in their ebay shop http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150606294837?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 still getting used to the staging, haven't really found the best way of doing it yet but having fun trying!!

Loving the penguin cake Littlebit!! Its brilliant, so cute!

So, here is my first ever tiered cake, its Optimus Prime for my friends little boys birthday, took me forever and was quite a hassle to get the "wings" on his head right. I bought some Tylo to add to my sugarpaste, but I think I added too much as it was really brittle the first time around, but the second lot turned out much better.

Brilliant Optimus Prime cake. I just showed my 28 year old son and he said " Fantastic, a proper Optimus Prime not like the new ones!!"
Guess what he wants for his next birthday?:rotfl:

OMG I am now totally addicted to this thread LOL, have been slowly but surely getting through some of the pages over the past couple of days!

My DH has decided he would really like to get into cake decorating so we have been looking for inspiration and I've certainly been getting it from here, the cakes are all fantastic!!!

Since he is a total novice, where is the best place to start, is there a 'bible' that anyone recommends or are most ideas found on the net?

He is going to start off by doing our DD's 5th birthday cake to make sure it's something he wants to and is able to do and we'll take it from there.

I would prefer to do cupcakes and have my first test of doing a colleagues 21st birthday on Friday. I was going to do some chocolate ice cream cone cupcakes and some vanilla cupcakes with toppers.

I had a wee practice the other day as I have NEVER iced before but I was chuffed to bit with the results. I never made the cakes though, they were just cheapy ones for testing to see if i could manage the icing, I'll make my own cakes if anyone has a good recipe i can use :)
