OMG I am now totally addicted to this thread LOL, have been slowly but surely getting through some of the pages over the passed couple of days!

My DH has decided he would really like to get into cake decorating so we have been looking for inspiration and I've certainly been getting it from here, the cakes are all fantastic!!!

Since he is a total novice, where is the best place to start, is there a 'bible' that anyone recommends or are most ideas found on the net?

He is going to start off by doing our DD's 5th birthday cake to make sure it's something he wants to and is able to do and we'll take it from there.

I would prefer to do cupcakes and have my first test of doing a colleagues 21st birthday on Friday. I was going to do some chocolate ice cream cone cupcakes and some vanilla cupcakes with toppers.

I had a wee practice the other day as I have NEVER iced before but I was chuffed to bit with the results. I never made the cakes though, they were just cheapy ones for testing to see if i could manage the icing, I'll make my own cakes if anyone has a good recipe i can use :)

Here is my first attempt of the cupcakes :D

    Those are great!, well done

Dad loves a good cup of tea, he also fell in love with a boat that was for sale (only £650,000). This is his birthday cake I made, a little more to our budget

Its a very basic cake but a family favourite (normally done as a traybake), just normal sponge with icing (icing sugar and water) then hundreds and thousands poured on to give it a chrunch :)

Hi, I've been lurking on this thread for quite a while becoming more and more envious of how beautiful all your creations are!

Well, I have decided that I want to learn how to decorate my cakes as at the moment I stick to plain icing and they’re boring!! I have taken the advice on this thread to buy a 1M nozzle and have looked on ebay etc to find one. On the off chance yesterday I popped into Hobbycraft and they had a Wilton 12 Piece Cupcake Decorating Set (4 nozzles & 8 bags) reduced to £6.99 that included the 1M (you all probably know of this set!) for me as a beginner it seemed a reasonable price as a starter kit to help me on my way. The set is also reduced online. (http://direct.hobbycraft.co.uk/products-Wilton-12-Piece-Cupcake-Decorating-Set_350090.htm)

Anyway I thought that it might be of use to someone and is my way of saying thanks for inspiring me to be more creative!!

    Thanks again!

Help please, I'm making a cake for my dd's birthday. I am going to cover it with fondant icing & have bought the edible rice paper butterflies- what is the best way to attatch them to the fondant I'm scared they will go soggy or dissolve. Thank's in advance.

    Hi

The most popular way of attaching the fondant is to do a thin layer if buttercream this is called a crumb coat it also evens the cake out and covers lumps and bumps. Once crumb coated stick it in the fridge to chill a little before adding the fondant there are loads of videos on you tube on doing this which are really helpful. You can also stick it on with apricot jam which is wamed a little and not lumoy but ypur cakes have to be pretty smooth for this method as the lumps and bumps will show through the fondant

Love it love it love it littlebit. How clever are you:) Can't believe it's your first big cake! I love your penguin he is so cute. Think your are being over critical (perfectionist are you?) X

lol yes sometimes its a bad thing i think tbh, i made it for everyone to enjoy it was only a small get together at the local RNA but apparently they decided to raffle it off and actually made less than it cost me to make so i am a bit disappointed as i wanted some feedback :o win some loose some i guess my next one is just a basic cake its going to be ginger and lemon for my dads birthday in a couple of weeks :D trying to get practice in for when i do my wedding cake next year we keep trying to make a date but financial stuff stops us sadly.

Welcome Teenie beware its very addictive:) Ideas come from everywhere colours you might see in an advert, on some fabric n think ooooh that'd work on a cake or themes which are easily found online, or make it up as you go along:) You look like you are off to a cracking start well done. And DH getting on board. Think I've been doing it about 18months now (although I've baked since I was at school) and I've picked tools up little by little and have a nice little collection now- although there are LOADS on my wish list. I started off buying a cake smoother and a few colour pastes then added an item or two for the next cake etc. etc.

Wow Vikki-Louise I love your cake in a teacup:) have you made the teacup? Apologies that sounded silly but it looks so fab.

Thank you and welcome Estateprincess that is a good offer, the nozzles on there own would be more than that.

Violetta I've used - cant exactly remember its name!!) the tubes of ready made icing you get in the supermarket think its a silverspoon one. It looks like a large tube of toothpaste! It's ready mixed and not too wet and handy rather than making up royal icing etc. If you can make sense from that I hope it helps.

Littlebit I don't think people have any idea how much work and cost goes into a homemade cake to appreciate it:( But it's all practice isn't it gghhhrr.
On the other hand it made money for a good cause and otherwise would have been eaten! They must've thought it looked too good to eat when they decided to raffle it:) So it is a compliment. And stop being so hard on yourself please. On the subject of your wedding my DH and I went to the local registry office with his brother and my best friend cost us £12.50 and a pretty dress. Next week we celebrate our 27th anniversary:) and friends who had big big fancy wedding are all sadly divorced or remarried by now so you don't need to have a big do just marry cos you want to spend the rest of your life with DH the rest doesn't really matter:)

This is a long post your probably bored by now but here are last weekends creations.th_13e06dcc.jpgth_01cad027.jpgth_1bad235c.jpg

It's ok I managed , I made a little dent in the fondant wet it slightly with a paint brush& water & the butterfly stuck to the fondant ok. Was surprised how easy it was- I shouldn't worry so much, thank's for the help.
