Now that I am thinking more about doing these cupcakes and reading through threads - my original idea of doing them all with my trusty fairy cake recipe and nice icing and gold decorations might not be enough. Would I need to be doing different flavoured buns?

Moosetastic - I dont have a home bargains - but there is a new poundland in town and b&m bargains - hopefully pick something up there.

Moosetastic - love the bottom pic with cupcakes on tiered stand - if I could get nice gold stars / flowers that would look quite good.... not sure if hotel maybe would have stand where we are having golden wedding anniversary party.
If I did that and then gave it all a sprinkle of gold dust ??

Or would 70 + cupcakes in cold muffin cases, with gold flowers/stars and gold dust look a bit OTT ?

As you can see any pointers gratefully received :)

bobs, I think the gold theme would work really well. Gold stars/hearts with a little bit of gold glitter on white icing, would stick to plain cases imo. The cake stand in the pic wasn't very expensive from eBay its about 3 years ago now but should still be able to get one. I'm not on the pc so can't post a link but will do it tomorrow if you are interested.

My top tips, search ebay for anything and everything, you'll be surprised what people sell!! Lol search things like gold cupcake, gold cake toppers etc and it will bring up lots of results. Don't be afraid to buy from Malaysia, HK either, I've bought lots of inexpensive tools/cutters from there. Main point you have to remember is that they will take several weeks to arrive, so order in plenty of time. If you want the easy route, you can buy ready made stars/hearts/flowers, but if you want to make them yourself, then its relatively cheap to buy a cutter in the chosen shape, white sugarpaste in any supermarket and gold magic sparkle from ebay, you can even buy gold lustre spray in tesco/asda which is really easy to use.

I'm sure everyone else will come and give you their opinions, im no expert, far from it!! Lol :)
You're so very special, I wish I was special

Not sure if this helps any Bobs, it was a 50th birthday and the top cake was designed to copy the invites. The venue said they had a cupcake stand, I was presuming it'd be like Moosetastics and was gutted but don't think they ended up looking that bad on their stand after all. Your hotel will be sure to have one of these stands or something very similar.

Love the Belle cake Moosetastic but have a feeling you just make it sound easy :) When you get another order I'd invest in a cake smoother about a fiver, two if you are feeling flush then you can coax those little bumps out.

Sorry Murie I've not done a tipsy turvy but I'd have a go I don't think they are much more complicated than a three tier cake. The tricky bit would be the angle of carving I think!
Sure one of our lovelies will be along shortly with better advise:)

Can I just point out that the wall behind is at the venue! Really posh place ha the camera never lies. Didn't want you to think I lived in a hovel!!
The 50s were cut from florists paste with a FME alphabet set that includes numbers but you could use stars then you'd only have to buy a star cutter:)

It's a very simple design I'm a less is more girl:)

I did the chocolate cake last night and stuck it in the freezer! Cupcakes this morning and vanilla and lemon just out the oven. More cupcakes this afternoon to replace the 'missing' ones. The cupcakes are getting collected tonight. Choc and lemon are for my sons Baptism tomorrow and vanilla is for my sisters FiL for tomorrow too with 1 Grandad, 3 grandson and a grandaughter sugarpaste figures on! Still got all the food to buy for tomorrow and I think that it might be tonight that I'm up all night!!!!

    Hiya Ladies,

I am more of a lurker than a poster on these boards nowadays, and I need a bit of advice!

I have been asked to bake my friends daughters 18th birthday cake (A giant cupcake) and 30 smaller cupcakes to go with it, and I normally only do chocolate or white icing. However, she is a girly girl, so I have bought some hot pink cases and was going to do some cakeys with pink icing and some with white.

I have got a few of the sugar flair gels, which are FAB, but I need a colouring thats going to get me hot pink. Any recommendations at all? I have two cake supply shops which I am visiting tomorrow, and was thinkign of pickign up the Claret colour Sugar Flair gel.

Any help is grately appreciated xxx

Thank you so much for all the lovely comments. Nanamia, I used a colouring book picture, print out 3 copies, and then just traced around the bulk of the shape, and added the detail later, the body & face is one piece, with the yellow dress on top, then the hair. Rainbow cake is over the weekend, eeeeek!!!

Heres a pic of what the colouring page was and the plaque -

Here's the cake in its full glory, Im not impressed with the sugarpaste on this one, the cake was way too bumpy and crumbly, so it doesnt look really round :(

BOBS, hello! The muffin cases I use are just from Home Bargains, nothing special, you get 125 for 99p - this is what they look like -

    WP_000050-2.jpg

If you dont have a Home bargains near you, then I also use these from Asda, you get half white half brown, but they hold their shape really well - cupcakes made in these cases -

Mossetastic these cakes are lovely how did you get the white icing to sit on the top of the cakes and how did you get the cakes level with the top of the cases
    TIA
