Being from the correct side of the Penines I sense a "economic" Yorkshireman at work here..... Just call out a professional. You'll have spent more on leccy posting here than it would cost to do it properly. ;)

OK. Have you taken the head off and tried operating the valve manually? That is the next step IF its the valve thats the problem. What is certain is that you have circulation issues.

You don't need a multimeter to check if the motor is operating. Whilst the head is off operate (or get someone else to operate) the CH controls. You will clearly see (and hear) the thing operating if it is OK.

Frankly, after 5 days of this thread running with little progress, you should be calling the guy who fitted the rad and telling him "something hasn't been quite right sionce you fitted the rad. Is there any chance you could pop round and have a look please". If he's any good he should do that FOC for you. Whether he discovers anything chargeable to fix it is an unknown quantity.

    Cheers

Hi (again), took the head off, got my OH to turn the heating on, inside the motor the cog thing turned by the springs and the heating turned on.

I also finally got through to the original plumber who did the bathroom rad and explained situation and he said what you guys have said, motor or valve and he will call me later to let me know when he can come round and have a look. Well I think now I have determined the motor is working fine I guess its going to be a new Honeywell 3 port motorised valve then? I have seen they cost about £55 delivered (http://www.plumbnation.co.uk/site/honeywell-v4073a-1039-22mm-3-port-mid-position-valve/) and about £40 brand new on e-Bay and I guess I should allow an hours labour too? The joys of being a home owner and also not very good at fixing things myself.

    Thanks for your time everyone.

One last question, how long does it take to drain the system to change the valve?

I have spoken with the plumber who is coming tomorrow to take a look at the valve, I have told him I will buy the part myself. He said that if he has to drain the system its half a days work, but I am sure in December when he drained the system to change the radiator it only took 1-2 hours. Just wondering so I am armed with all the correct information etc when he comes to sort it tomorrow.

    Thanks

Mine took a while to drain as it dribbled out. I left it draining while I went off to watch the Grand Prix on telly. Half day sounds reasonable to me - 2 hours drain, half hour to fit, hour to refill, bleed, test, bleed some more, etc.

Down 'ere in da souf' we have a very good system - Checkatrade.com - where people can look at your past jobs and make an informed guess if you are the real deal - I find this very helpful with customers - I know what I know and that's going to cost you - If I can fix it and source the problem - happy days - Personally I prefer to see the job, buy the correct bits and charge the customer - I am not greedy and just want an honest days wage - I also explain exactly what is going on. Sometims it is just false economy to do it for yourself. I hope you have now got the syytem sorted - also find a couple of reliable tradesman and stick with them - goo dluck

No idea how it was done but when my valve was changed the system did not have to be drained down, must be a trade secret!!

Two threads running now on this one!!!

It's not a trade secret. It's actually very obvious - you just need to think about it.
