Radiators are hot but the heating is not on

Options
Hi all

Wondering if someone can help.

I have just noticed that my bathroom and spare room radiators are both warm/hot even though the heating is not on. None of the other radiators in the house are hot, just these two.

The hot water is on so I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. I have now turned both thermostats on the radiators to off, but some of the others are set to 3 or 4 and as I say are not hot.

I dont get it? I had the one in the bathroom replaced at Christmas but not the one in the spare room.

I havent noticed them or the rooms they are in being hot whatsoever.

Any ideas?

Thanks

probably the 2 or 3 port motorised valve is leaking/seeping.
allowing some hot water to go to the radiators, when that circuit should be shut off.
    Get some gorm.

I concur, had this problem myself a few years ago.

There is usually a visible actuator arm on the motorised valve.

Observe it whilst turning the heat and water on and off.

  • Thanks guys - where is this motorised valve located?
  • I have just seen the valve in the airing cupboard, I think its a Honeywell F9-0972, I looked on the bottom of it and it had two sides;

    AUTO MANUAL

The lever/slider was everso slightly away from the AUTO side, could this have made a difference? I have manually pushed it all the way to the AUTO side, it was very dusty there so have blown all that away.

Would the fact it not be all the way over at the AUTO side have caused that?

    Thanks

Yes, it's possibly sticking. wipe off the dust, waggle it to and fro a few times, maybe give it a shot of WD40 and see if that frees it up.

  • Thanks, does that little lever move along from AUTO for any reason? Could it have been like this for a long time and I just never noticed the radiators being on in the summer? Or could it have something to do with the fact that radiator was replaced in the winter? I am happy to turn the radiators off in the summer and back on in the winter, but hoping the fact the lever wasnt all the way over at Auto was the cause.

like I posted before, get someone to turn on the central heating and watch/listen to the valve. Then turn the heating off and turn on the hot water. There should be a whirring noise and the lever should move. If it dosent then there is your problem. On some you can replace the head,

I've had two of these damn things fail. Wish they would go back to separate valves. Not much fun having the heating on full blast in August, or no hot water.
Only SOME radiators is a little confusing though. Probably IS just a leak, and all radiators or on, but the heat dissipates around the system before it gets downstairs, so you can't feel it.

The bathroom rad on older systems may well be on the primary circuit so that it operates whenever DHW is on to keep the towels warm and also acts as a bypass. But your system may not be configured that way. How is it configured?

Have your others rads got TRVs on? Are they open or shut down?

Convert it to S plan then.
