If it gains momentum it could become the microsoft of telecoms. However this is very unlikely looking at how widespread SIP has become.

Personally I'd really like one of these as they look really cool and convienient, however, I heard that you have to do something special to get US sipphones to work in the UK although admittedly that's not really just a SIPphone.

I mean if you connect a dect phone to one of those things you pretty much have a wireless SIPphone for the house without any need for a wireless router. I must admit though it's a shame the router isn't wireless at that price.

Would the TYN-200 handset perform significantly better than my standard headset plugged into my computer's headphone and microphone sockets?

It's more a matter of convenience. After all it's just a USB mike and earpiece bundled as a phone handset. I find it easier to pick up the phone rather than plug in and put on a headset. Plus it leaves my PC speakers working with normal apps without having to change settings on the pc.

and not having to use any of the crappy software.

Genuine question, not a flame. Why would the software be any better/worse than the firmware on a hardware SIP phone chip? After all they're using the same technology.

Some hardware phones have a wider range of codecs or include a later / better codec than most the software have.

Also if you set things up correctly with a hardware system, you will always ensure enough bandwidth is available for the call.

I have tried the software phone from snom, and if their real phones handle like this then I want one, it allows 7 accounts on the one phone.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

This is probably a silly question, but if you had the handset model from your supplier with the keypad you would not need a softphone would you? Or to put it another way, why did you go for the non-keypad option when the other was only £1 more?

Go on, shoot me down. :)

If this is a USB phone, then you would still need to run the same software you are running now.

The best way to go is with a separate VoIP phone / adaptor & standard phone, that way you do not need the PC to be on at all.

If you use ADSL, then DABS are selling this router with built-in VoIP terminal adapter for £67.25 inc VAT and Delivery:

    http://www.dabs.com/uk/productview?quicklinx=3LFS&referrerid=WS

You could then plug any normal phone into it to use it with any SIP VoIP service.

    Thanks

I have it working OK now using Firefly. The only problem seems to be that the person at the other end of the call suffers from a distracting echo of themselves.

Has anyone any suggestions to cure this?

If you have a relative living in another country with a 3G mobile, it may, MAY be possible to use SIPgate on the foriegn 3g mobile. I think it may possible to do this via GPRS but the bandwidth is quite limited and the quality would probably be very poor.

If that worked, you'd be able to ring your relative from the UK fo absolutely nothing. Wi-fi is all very well but 3G is alot more extensive in cities.

I'm not sure whether this would be convienient as on the forign mobile how would you know when the call is about to be recieved? I guess this could be solved by sending an international text.

I know it's possible to call them in this way using SIP anyway, but the allocation of a UK geo number will make it a local call for anyone ringing them from the UK.

My PC stays on 24/7 and I spend far too much time sitting at it. I chose not to buy the keypad version because it's marketed as a Skype only keypad. I may be wrong on that but I already have an even easier to use hardware keypad - my desktop keyboard! :)
