Does anyone know how much bandwidth VoIP uses? I know there are many factors involved, including the codec used, but as a rough figure for two hours worth of calls a week? I'm interested in signing up with ntl when I move, and I'm not sure which package to choose.
As I won't be downloading loads of large files and I work full-time (so only really using the Internet at weekends) the 1Mbps package at £17.99 for 3Gb/month looks tempting, but if VoIP uses lots of bandwidth, it might not be practical. I note in their t&c that they won't cut you off if you go over, but will instead give you options to change your package or pay for additional bandwidth - otherwise I'd have no phone!0 -
It uses udp packets at around 3kbps. So for your 4 hours per month that's 3 x 60 x 60 x 4 = 43,200 kb.
The package you are looking at will have a cap of 3 GB per month (gigabyte not gigabit as you posted) so your four hours per month will use up 1.43% of your limit.

Hi - is there any software or IP Phone devices that encrypts calls and keeps them secure?
Can you send / receive faxes over a VOIP line?0 -
Website for voip

Now states....
UK National Calls (land lines) XX
UK National Calls (mobiles) XX
Poland 1
France 1
United States 0.0 !!
Singapore 0.5
Russia 1
Germany 0.0 !!
Ireland 0.5

Do the XXs indicate these are now blocked? Charged?
I wonder what has changed,

Can anyone assist me with this VOIP please?
I have downloaded the 1899 software, registered my phone number, password etc, purchased a headphone/mic and plugged them into the relevant jack points on the front of the computer.
Have dialled my own landline (without the 1899 prefix?) and the phone rings, but no ringing tone in the headset yet there is a “ringing” tone from the computer speakers and the message 0p per minute. If I use the 1899 prefix I get a message at bottom of on screen phone pad “call rejected by remote”
I have let my answerphone pick up and spoke a message into the microphone, but no message is put on answerphone? When checking online invoice it has registered the call at no charge,so something is right.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong and how to fix it, in really simple terms please.
Do I need to unplug my computer speakers and plug the headphones into the back? Seems silly as there are jack points on the front
Also if I get it working can I use VOIP on MSN Messenger?
All advise greatfully appreciated

Sorry I can't deal with your problem right now but I will try to. Start with trial and error though, rule out each possibility and work your way down to the problem. Start on the software side.
As for MSN messenger, no you won't be able to use 1899 integrated into MSN because MSN is propriatory software, the protocol it uses is owned by microsoft.
For MSN why not try
http://www.phonegaim.com
or the newer gaim without VoIP @
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/
It's a university messaging client, this means you can add all of your instant messaging accounts to it, yahoo, MSN, ICQ, AIM etc.
However Phonegaim is gaim but with a VoIP client on top. Unfortunately Phonegaim is currently designed to work with Sipphone. An good American VoIP company. This means that you can't use Gaim with any other VoIP client. But don't fret :-) gaim is licencned under the GPL a copyleft licence that can be modifed and redistributed by anyone. This means that the Gaim code can be used for any VoIP client.
I'm thinking of trying to hack phonegaim to get it to work with 1899 and redistributing it, this is legal under the LGPL which is the licence it's under. A lesser form of the GPL. So watch this space. As for MSN, MSN isn't distributed with the source code so I can't hack the code as there is none to hack, thus it's pretty much impossible for an MSN 1899 VoIP client to appear, even if users want to create it, they have no rights to.
For the time being I'd use firefly software. You'll find a link to it somewhere on this thread.0 -
Have sorted the headphone problem? spoke to computer suppliers who said they had not wired the front jack plugs
They said there was usually problems with front plugs so they did not wire them,
I told them that as I bought the computer with these jacks fitted I wanted to use them, they are to send someone on Monday to wire them.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0
