I pay £44 a month at Leicester Fitness Club- gym, classes, pool. That's an off peak single membership. I think the set up fee was something like £35, this is a 3 month flexi contract one.

I really really wish people would stop paying "joining fee's"

They get charged because people pay them.

Firstly stop breaking this down into a monthly fee i.e £80/month and use the total contract value i.e £80 * 12 months = £960.

Secondly say you're happy to pay £960 for a years membership but you're not prepared to pay a £40 joining/administration fee. If they say its non-negotiable or try an offer an inducement again say no.

Thirdly, stick to your guns. Remind them that not only are they not going to get the joining/admin fee they'll lose your £960 if they insist. Then if nessasary walk out letting them know they're letting £960 walk out of the door.

I'll say it again they charge these additional fees because they get away with it.

Anyone know the Worthing prices? They appear to have vantage, peak & off peak. I'd only be using the one gym and not going at weekends so off peak prob best for me but I'm also NHS staff so think I get a discount

Still thinking about joining,I have tried budget gyms and don't like them, it's like a cattle market.
I know its a massive jump to the prices of David Lloyd but if it gets me motivated its worth it as I need to do something.

Apart from the cost most people seem happy with David Lloyd as what I can see when searching the web
  • I would always recommend David Lloyd's to anyone, yes the gym membership is more expensive than others but if I'm honest that actually makes me think twice about not using it. If I were to join Pure gym for 15 p/m I would be less likely to think about not using it (as my friend does)

DL charge me £61 p/m as I'm 18-22, that's they're equivalent of student membership really. If I wanted to switch from flexible contract to a 12 month I would only pay £51 but for now I like the options. My membership includes everything in the gym including racquets and I can use any other UK DL gym.

My partner who is older pays £95 p/m but like me he also gets everything included, he has been a member for nearly 10 years and wouldn't switch.
As a couple to get what we have now would only cost £120 p/m so may switch at renewal.

I understand gyms vary by location, I go to the Cardiff gym and I can say it is the best gym I have ever gone to, the reception staff are generally very friendly as are the staff on the gym floor, even at 6 in the morning. :)

I pay for peak membership at Nottingham with NHS discount- £77 per month, one month free which is negotiable for every new member
  • We currently pay £160 a month for myself, husband and our 9 year old child. However, our child gets to go to all the classes, which include kids football and cheerleading and break dancing included. Unlimited swimming including the outside pool. We declined the "vantage membership" which was about £25 a month per person. We also declined the racquets membership of £10 extra a month.

we go to all the classes etc and definitely get our moneys worth. But the problem is that it is a brand new site and horrendously busy at the moment. Booking classes is very cutthroat and they are ALL fully booked. They have the most classes than any DL site in the UK, but they still dont have enough.
