  • Hi, I've never posted before so Hello :) I thought I'd tell you my experience at DL. I went with a friend as a guest, I have never been a member of a gym before but was starting to think about getting fit.
I hummed and harred for several months because as has been said before it is VERY expensive. But then I decided to biet the bullet and do it. I pay 77.00 a month for peak but no racquets. Do I think it's expensive? Yes. Do I think it's worth it? Yes.
I do mostly classes which in my branch there is about 18 a day to choose from. I also use the pool now and then.
I've looked around other gyms in the past, and used the local swimming pool, and imo there is no comparison to the facilities that are available to me at DL. I go to about 9 hour long classes a week, so if I had to pay for those locally at say 6.oo a go that would mean I would pay way over the 77.00 membership.
I do shift work so the choice of times really suits me. Also the gym/toilets/changing room area is always spotless which I have not found in other pools I've used..
All in all I would say that yes DL is expensive, but the choice and standard of the facilities is worth every penny to me. Also I've never had any problem with the staff, who always acknowledge me and seem approachable although I've never had any reason to go and see them.

I have just renewed my membership, and the price is pretty much the same as last year (paid the year in advance in full).

I paid £1,232 in June 2014, and £1,264 this year, so an increase of about £3 per month...

When I complained about not getting anything as a long term member (I have been at the same club for 9 years), they gave me 6 guest passes, and I received a "thank you for renewing" email with another 2.

    Nothing to complain about.
  • £486 per annum just renewed. Stevenage is a DL "Leisure" club with Gym, spa & pool facilities only. We now get access to all other DL Leisure clubs (gyms & pools) but the racquets clubs.

If your child joins at age 13, do they increase the fee per month when they turn 14 during the year membership or does it stay at the age 13yr level until renewal?
  • I know this message board was from a while ago but thought this would still be useful as I came across this whilst googling recently..

These are the prices for Farnham

    David Lloyd Prices/Month

    Standard vantage £130
    Standard £95
    Young persons (18-22) £60

    Corporate vantage £110
    Corporate standard £85

    Couples corporate vantage £95
    Couples corporate standard £75

I originally thought they just made up the prices for as much as they couldn't get for each person, but Farnham DL have a set price list which they show you on paper, very expensive but I think it's worth it if you use it well.
  • Went to David Lloyd Solihull for standard membership not including tennis/squash etc wanted £80 per month with £40 joining fee. Facilities were great, staff were friendly. It has a real 'family' vibe which I wasn't looking for in a gym. They were really pushing the racquets thing though.
  • Stevenage - David Lloyd gym membership 2016

    Annual renewal fee is £491.00

I do weights and cardio only. They have pool.

    Good points
Above average variety of weight equipment and machines.
Not too crowded especially at quiet times.
    Fairly relaxed atmosphere
Some of the staff and trainers are very nice

    Bad points
-In my opinion it's overpriced and not worth the money however finding an alternative gym is difficult unless willing to travel so I'm always looking at other gyms to find a better one. It's plastered all over the Internet about millions of pounds worth of investment. But As an accountant myself I struggle to see how 450k pounds has been invested in this gym. I wonder if these numbers have been glossed up somehow ie money invested to repay debt , investment just in time to cover bonus's etc etc I have tried to find out but to no avail.
-don't eat your own food or drink in cafe bar it's against rules you have to buy it from them. So I drink my protein drink in my car.
-replaced one of the two good squat racks with an inferior one. The rack has limited variations in height causing me to stoop low to commence squat or raise heels to get off rack.
-I find the music they play not to my taste to put it politely and would prefer it if they turned it down a bit.
-clogged up what was a perfect stretching area with a trx type metal tower
-concerned about lots of terms and conditions and worried about cancelling so need to be clear on notice periods.

Gym is ok until I find a better one. I would give it 2 out of 5 NOW

If price was £100 lower per year I would give it 3 out of 5.
If I was very rich, very fat and very unfit I would give it 4 out of 5

    JMHO

  • Hi all,

I ventured to David Lloyd in Exeter recently (March 2016) and was asked a series of questions regarding membership.

    1. How many people is it for?
    2. Will you want to use other David Lloyd gyms?
    3. Do you want any additional classes?

I told them I wanted it for myself using only one gym and no additional classes. (If you don't want to incur additional monthly costs, this is the best route to take)

The joining fee was £40.00 (I was told this was a one off non negotiable fee)
Based on a PEAK membership the monthly charge was £78.75 (12-Month Minimum contract)

I was told if I wanted to opt for the 3-Month flexible contract, my monthly membership charge would go up to £93.75 per month (Therefore £15.00 on top of the standard contract costs).

I asked how much a family membership would cost.
My daughter is 3 years old.

The Family Membership package was broken down as follows:
Myself: 67.00 per month (Minumum 12 month contract)
Her indoors: £67.00 per month (Minumum 12 month contract)
My daughter: £11.75 per month (Minumum 12 month contract)

    Joining fees:
Myself: £40.00 (I was told this was a one off non negotiable fee)
Her indoors: £40.00 (I was told this was a one off non negotiable fee)
My 3 year old: £11.00 (I was told this was a one off non negotiable fee)

If I wanted to go for the 3-month flexible contract, then I was told to add £15.00 a month to each of the above costs as well as INCLUDING the baby's £15.00... therefore an additional £45 per month...
In a nutshell, if I opt for the 12-month contrtact

    Single member charges:
£82.08 Per Month (Includes the cost of the joining fee)

    Family membersip charges:
    £153.33 Per Month
(Includes the cost of the joining fees)

I'm not saying I won't be joining, I would just like people to make an informed decision before they waste their time by viewing all the facilities then being hit with these costs!

Remember... these charges are for 12 months, not one month and it's a legally binding contract that they DO NOT want you to get out of no matter what!
Also, as some of the other threads say, when cancelling your membership after 12-months, deliver your cancellation letter by hand to the club's reception and make sure you get a receipt from reception for your letter of cancellation - Make sure they state "Letter of cancellation received" with the persons name and the date on letter heaed David Lloyd paper. If they won't provide you with a receipt (Unlikely, but you never know) Ask to speak to the Manager immediately, and take it up with them.

    Good luck :j
  • Hi,
Just quickly the costs for a standard family membership (12-month contract), with no racquets will be roughly
    You: £67/Month
    Husband: £67/Month
    Kids: £25 Each/Month
Joining fees: £40 each (Kids may be a little less)

As for what the kids get out of it... I'd suggest quite a lot if you sign them up to activities and other things available at the club. So that depends on you and your budget really.

    Happy shopping :)
