They offer good facilities. And their staff are helpful

    But
They are extortionately more expensive for what they offer.
Their monthly fee is very high
Their joining fee (really?!) is very very high
Guest passes are very high (£35 for one adult & one child to use pool)
Kids activities, personal training, extras (like Tennis etc) are extremely expensive

Another point to note is they bind you to a 3-month break clause - a thinly veiled ploy to extract more money from customers should they have the temerity to cancel their membership

Put simply, you can get better cheaper, much

Can you tell me where I can get indoor/outdoor pools and indoor/outdoor tennis courts that are better and cheaper? I'm sold! I love both swimming and tennis, I'd prefer to do both outdoors but sometimes the British weather just doesn't cooperate...
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

Where I live there are at least three others including an independent (for half the price) that offer indoor pool, and two of them offer indoor tennis
I don't just object to the fees, but to the attitude - why should there be a 3-month notice period AFTER your contract period? Why is that even allowed? Imagine if one of the regulated industries (like energy) tried that

Joined today at Speke £63.50 p/month, H&F Individual Membership (Peak but excludes racquets) and I can use any club in the North West. Find me another gym with the same facilities and variety of services offered - MUST be clean and hygienic - I would bet my life on it that no one can. Don't embarrass yourself and suggest DW!!

ETA - £36 joining fee with nothing to pay until 01/01/15 BUT contract only 'begins' then so I'm tied in til the following Jan with the standard 3 months notice of termination requirement

The latest Men's Fitness magazine (£3.99) has a 28 day free membership card for DL.

I don't know the T&C's as I just spotted it in Tesco earlier while I was killing time, but seems a very good little offer if you want to use a gym for a few weeks.

My wife are members at Cheshire Oaks and pay £130 per month, we can go anytime, but can't use racquets courts.
I asked for membership price list but they don't have one. They said it would be cheaper to be individual members at £62.50 each.
My sister and her husband (also members at DL Cheshire Oaks) pay about £108 per month, she'll dig out paperwork to check.
So there are 3 different charges for 2 people to have same membership at same club.
This is no way to run a business.....

Been using the DL in Heston (West london) for the past couple of weeks with the 12 days for £12 deal

Was a bit difficult in the 1st place to actually sign up, after waiting for them to call popped in then was told to wait an hour or so then rang the next day to book an appointment with the sales team then finally got it done lol

Same issue when asking the reception people for a price list each time they said you'll need to ask the sales team

No idea why their so secret about it as virgin active (probably their main competitor) have got the prices online no probs

I'm going to DL Gidea Park tomorrow for look around, meet personal trainer and try the swimming pool. I've been swimming at the local council pool at £4 a day - every day since Jan 1st so it's working out at £4 a day = £28 a week but of course on pay as you go basis. A full month will be over £100 on just swimming alone.

I plan to get the off peak no racquets membership so I can do swimming indoor and outdoor pool, 3 classes a week ( Zumba/ Latin ) and very light gym for toning. Hopefully using it that much in the daytime ( I'm self employed ) - it will work out worthwhile.

I'll post a list of prices.

  • Hey,

Are you looking for Tennis Instructor, Then simply visit our website(tennismethod.com) and find the best tennis instructor.
  • Densol,

£69 pcm to start ... £82 next year ... £98 ... the year after, and you'll see other new joiners to full peak time with racquets paying less than you while you are still on off-peak no racquets.

It's a mug's game. Prices are not published, you are interviewed to be priced.
  • These were the prices I was quoted in July 2014, hope it helps.
There was a £36 setup fee (bit scammy I thought) that they would not waive and I wouldn't pay so they gave me a months membership for free instead.
    Full individual membership includes raquets.
Standard is 3 month notice period (minimum 12 months membership)
Flexible is 1 month notice period (minimum 3 months membership)
Vantage lets you use other clubs, you get a free towel, 1 monthly guest pass, discounts on food / coaching etc.
It went up by just over £1 at the start of 2015.
I am putting this up as useful info, not a stab at DL. I enjoy going there, the people and facilities and will continue with my membership.
