Vent:Store staff told me they would search me

Yes pretty much, and also because most of the time when I have to go into shops and these alarms get set off I know what has done it and I am certainly not going to be explaining that to a security guard, but also because I know I haven't stolen anything and because I do not have to engage in conversation with revenue protection employees who normally have bog all understanding of the law.
If the alarm went of and you refused to allow me to search you or the police I would just ban you from the store as is my right so that if you had stolen you wouldn't be able to do it again.
My point is you may know you have not stolen but the store doesn't do they, if you are uncooperative then you are likely to get banned. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

I once set off the alarm as I was going into a shop. Shop assistant came up to me, we worked out what it was (something I'd bought in another shop), I presented the receipt for it and they deactivated whatever it was that sets the alarm off. Took all of five minutes and it prevented setting off any other alarms in other shops.Competition wins: Where's Wally Goody Bag, Club badge branded football, Nivea for Men Goody Bag0

Why would I allow you to do something you have no legal power to do?
I could not give two hoots about being banned. It must be accepted as a principle that the rifle cannot replace the speed of the horse, the magnetism of the charge and the terror of cold steel.

Just to clarify, setting off one of these detectors is not a reasonable grounds for a police officer to search you, and security guards have no powers to search you. They can request that you submit to a voluntary search. I would never do so, I have no intention of letting some grubby untrained security guard go through my things, in these cases I normally ignore everything they say and walk out.
Just to clarify further, Police Officers have searched in these circumstances, the grubby untrained idiots.0 -

Well they are incorrect to do so.It must be accepted as a principle that the rifle cannot replace the speed of the horse, the magnetism of the charge and the terror of cold steel.

Yep there is even poor training in the police force. It must be accepted as a principle that the rifle cannot replace the speed of the horse, the magnetism of the charge and the terror of cold steel.

Yep there is a lot of rudeness...
But again that is an aside from the fact security guards have no powers to search you, or detain you pending a search just because the theft alarm has gone off.It must be accepted as a principle that the rifle cannot replace the speed of the horse, the magnetism of the charge and the terror of cold steel.

I think rudeness is partly what the OP was about.
It has been said time and time again on this thread, security guards have no power to search you,yes.0
