Vent:Store staff told me they would search me

Can anyone point me towards a summary of my rights please, from a reputable source?

I entered a store today when as alarms went off. After a short conversation a member of staff told me "we will stop and search you when you leave"

I told her that they would not!

I left without any attempt to search me but would like to know what my rights are in such circumstances

Short post as its left me v stressed and I have a bad migraine so cant see too well to type but will elaborate later if anyone is interested

Thanks in anticipation

if you set the alarm off when you leave then they're entitled to stop you otherwise there's no point having the alarms.

Did the alarm go off when you left?

    You can refuse a search.

I'm not sure whether or not they can restrain you but somebody will be along shortly to verify.

They can contact police who will search you.

In future, just accept the search. Every time I walk out of a shop and the alarms go off I've always presented myself for a search. Usually they don't bother, sometimes they have a poke through my bags and pockets, apologise then let me on my way.

If it really leaves you feeling stressed you need to get out more.

In future, just accept the search. It takes 10 seconds and saves a lot of crap.

Whiney rights moaners like you are normally the reason shops have a hard time catching actual shop-lifters. Just accept that mistakes happen and move on with life.

Unless of course, you're stealing something in which case I can see why you'd refuse.

    I've been Money Tipped!
They have absolutely no right of search - the only people that have that are the Police

They can ask to look in your bags but you are allowed ro refuse this request ;)

It doean't make sense for them to notice you set the alarms off going in then threaten to search you on the way out :rotfl:

Everyone has the right to say "I'm going to search you", it doesn't necessarily mean they will or can!

To the best of my knowledge, only a police officer is entitled to actually search your person or property.

From the information you've given, are you sure they haven't just badly worded their intentions to you? And that the offer was to search you before you leave in order to prove that you had set the alarm off innocently?

Good God, what an odious poster you are!

Not only are you odious, you can't even read.

The OP said: "I entered a store today when as alarms went off. "

    Note the underlined part. rolleyes.gif

They searched your POCKETS,no way is that normal procedure!!
  • Don't see why they said that as you entered their store. Not like you could of stolen something by just entering!

I would of just let them do it and watched smugly as they found nothing. Would of cheered me up more then stressed me out. Refusing it makes it out that you have something to hide.
I try to help as much as I can. But I'm also honest and speak my mind.

My question was: Can anyone point me towards a summary of my rights please, from a reputable source?

    Can anyone do this please?

If you were told you would be searched and were not, your rights are the exact same as if you were not told you would searched and were not.
