Have a great weekend everyone. We are off to a National Trust property so hoping it will be a cheapish day.

    Debt-free and Proud!
WE WAS BRUNG UP PROPER !!
"And we never had a whole Mars bar until 1993"!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE
    1930's 1940's, 50's, 60's and early 70's !
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos...
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.
Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.
Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos.
Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on a Sunday, somehow we didn't starve to death!
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with.
We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because.........
    WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O..K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY ,
    no video/dvd films,
no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
    Lawsuits from these accidents.
    Only girls had pierced ears!
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time...
We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!
Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet because we didn't need to keep up with the Jones's!
Not everyone made the rugby/football/cricket/netball team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on
    MERIT
Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and throw the blackboard rubber at us if they thought we weren't concentrating .

We can string sentences together and spell and have proper conversations because of a good, solid three R's education.

Our parents would tell us to ask a stranger to help us cross the road.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!
Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla'
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO
    DEAL WITH IT ALL !
And YOU are one of them!
    CONGRATULATIONS!
You had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.
You might want to forward this to a friend, you might also want to forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

About 20p has gone in this week so far :) Still really pleased about hitting my target, whatever's extra will stay in for the next year I think.

Brilliant news, Willow!!! :T:T You've done yourself proud and it's a delight to see you sounding so very happy this year! You never know when a little bit of good fortune will come along, Willow, just as it did for you! :j Well done with the leftovers thoughts.
Can't believe how exciting saving money is.
My only regret is that I haven't joined on here before now.

Words like yours are music to my ears, mumof3plusoh, congratulations, especially on the OD and budget!!! All the best with the Target. :D

Hello and welcome back, Helen!!!! :hello: I hope you had a terrific time in Canada. I'm glad it's not just me that can't sleep...though I haven't been on holiday, maybe that's sumat to do with it. :undecided Good to see you, with your cents 'n all.

Oh, those were the days eh sparky. Thanks for putting that on, it's a great reminder of "the good ole days"!!! My DH still curses about our (we were at the same school) Deputy Head who used to put any lad's forehead on the desks then put his left hand flat on the back of the head and punch it with his right!!!! Does make you wonder about his migraines though - sue him they'd cry now!

Have a wonderful weekend whatever you're doing folks.

  • Hi guys,

After my last post a few weeks ago saying I read EVERY one, I have to confess I've not had the time :( so apologies but I'm here now to say Hi :hello:

I've added a few coins to the pot today after going shopping and having a bit of change. I'm quite tempted to count it but will resist for the time being. I know it won't be that brilliant but anything is always a bonus.

Hope everyone has a lovely (dry) Sunday. It horrid here. Was raining when I got up and hasn't stopped all day. xx

  • Hi!! Newbie to these forums, and I'd love to join this one! Funny how you get addicted so quickly! As you probably gathered from my screen name, the plan is to be debt free by 30, and I've got until June 2014!

I have no clue what I will spend my sealed pot on, if it will clearing a debt a bit quicker (my sister has been so good, she has lent me an awful lot of money and I would love to get her paid back even though she keeps saying she is no rush for it at all). But then, a nest egg for Christmas next year would definately be a big big BIG help! And I have a credit card that I need to settle and get out of my hair. And then again, my long term goal is to move to Australia for a year, and I have to have applied for my visa by my 30th birthday - so do I save long term to go towards that?!

    CONFUSED.COM!!!:rotfl:

But anyway, sorry for going off on a wee tangent there! Is it okay if I take a number, put £2.00 in to start me off, and will be quiet from now on? lol :o

A very warm welcome debtfreeby30, welcome to MSE too. it's lovely to have you with us. biggrin.gif Have great fun saving. You'll find your number at the bottom of the list on post 3 of page 1. Please read through post 1 as it'll let you know exactly what to do with the challenge. Please pop your number on your sig, it helps so very much

Ok debtfreeby30 you're up and away now. You save what you want and for as long as you want, whatever you choose is fine by me as the main aim here is to save! If it helps, would more than one pot be beneficial?! Food for thought for you.

Incidentally, we have no rules on folk going off on a tangent and have some of the greatest natterers right here (though we'll keep that between ourselves!;)), but mostly folk waffle about money, so you go right ahead.

    Save well. :D

Having a good weekend here so far thanks, Muppet_baby, well done on the voucher swaps, tis all savings which is all that counts.

Hi there Observer, good to see you, though never worry about not reading EVERY post...it's not a by law you know! ;) I see you're still saving and that's all that counts. Try to stall any temptation of counting up as it's less than 3 months to go til December 1st now so hang on for a while. BTW, you're quite right anything saved is a bonus, so keep saving as much as you can! Lovely day down here btw...though maybe I shouldn't have said that. :p;)

Right then, bedtime beckons. I'll see you all tomorrow. Have a lovely day whatever the weather.
