thanks everyone have tried everything in post 46 but cant seem to get past the grey box which says which file would you like to open this program. so i have now given the laptop back to my brother and hes getting a repair man to take a look, but i now have the problem with a threat on my pc, prevx has detected a virus this one RESCUE_SYSTEM-COMMON-EN[1].EXE
malwerebytes, spybot, microsoft essencials hasent detected it with all the scans i've done.0 -
I thought you already got past which file would you like to open this with before by clicking on the reg file, otherwise you wouldn't be able to scan with malwarebytes. Get your brother to do the same, it's a 2 second fix, and far cheaper than a repair man
If prevx has detected a threat, let it deal with it.
You should both consider using sandboxie in future, and backup.!!

I did a scan on my pc with bitfeneder and it found nothing so have got rid of prevx must be a false pos.0 -

sounds like it could be a virus on the MBR. Master Boot Record. There is a small app to check for infections in the MBR its called MBRCHECK
see here http://windows7themes.net/how-to-check-mbr-for-virus-infection-via-mbrcheck.html
Normally for recovery dvd's they should boot from dvd, however some companies only put the data on the dvd and have the recovery program on the hdd itself in a hidden partition hence the F key. which is a problem if you cant get the hidden partition to unhide and run the software to do the recovery.
options, there is a free Windows 7 recovery disc compatible with Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, you boot your computer with this cd/dvd and then use your recovery disc to reinstall. The recovery disc only contains the software to enable the recovery you have to use the discs you created.
See link http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/
you can see what it is here theres a screen shot and 2 downloads one for 32bit and 1 for 64bit, guessing you can use the 32bit on both.0 -
in post 52 its says i had a threat on my pc not my brothers, he has the grey box on his pc which i cant get rid of, sorry for the confusion.0

Sorry havent been about for a bit, the teckie guy that my brother was going to use has let him down, this is the box that he is getting on the laptop, but there is very little options to choose from in the file list. still have no internet access it keps asking for a dial up number.0

erm. that file is a exe file, so the system is infected, download the fixexe.reg file someone posted on page1. onto a usb flashdrive, also download malwarebytes and rkill also on the same post.
1. import fixexe.reg into the laptop registry link to it http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/reg/antivirus-vista-2010/FixExe.reg
2. run rkill.scr or rkill.bat or rkill.exe same program just different extensions. do not reboot the computer http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill
3. install malwarebytes and update, then run a FULL SCAN. http://www.malwarebytes.org will probably what you to reboot do so.
4. optional. you may want to get the http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 Anti-rootkit utility tdsskiller extract the file from the zip file, its a single exe file, so just put on the usb flash drive. save extracting on the infected.0 -
what are the answers to post 55
fixexe.reg adds some entries to the registry which should fix the exe problem.
rkill hopefully stops the malware running so you can run a virus scanner.
malwarebytes hopefully will remove and cure the infection.
so you have to do these 3 simple things in that order, and if at any stage something doesn't work, please clearly explain exactly what is happening on screen - even after all these posts, I still don't know if any exe's work, or whether you have got past the first step - you are apparently launching internet explorer, which is an exe, and apparently launching malwarebytes (maybe?), which is an exe.
IE, tools, internet options, connections, make sure never dial a connection is ticked!!
