Otherwise, I would go the recovery system CD route first

Use your PC to get the ISO version and IMGBurn or similar to make the disc

Thanks it a toshiba satallite pro, windows 7, now loading everything on to discs

takes 2 seconds to run from memory stick

Maybe I'm being a bit dull here but surely you need to boot from the recovery disk rather than trying to open it in Windows.
