    Ocado clearly want people to amend their orders! I placed my order on the 23rd for delivery tomorrow and have recieved 3 text messages from them and an e-mail telling me time is running out if i want to amend my order and details of how to do it!

    well shoot me down now but......

    I feel really peeved reading this thread. Yes I feel sorry for those who did not get to use their code and yes I agree that serious efforts should have been put in place to allow genuine registrants to use their fairly obtained code but this is nothing new if you are familiar face to MSE - offers that are left open to abuse will be.

    People insinuating that they were more entitled than others because they were 'relying' on this discount for 'normal' groceries, is tosh - I mean what would you have done if this offer weren't on?

    For the record, I registered only once for the code on crowdity before the number got to 1000 and yes I was lucky enough to get my order in.

    I received mine tonight - half an hour after my time slot as the delivery driver was ill and they had to replace him. I rang as I object to paying £6.99 if they then don't stick to the time slot - even though I understand this was beyond their control - and they refunded the charge. Got the free choccies and puds too. Feel sorry for the people who missed out, let's hope they sort something out as it's unfair

    There is such an incredible sense of entitlement on these forums it is unbelievable. I understand the disappointment. I understand those annoyed at people doing multiple orders, but many of those complaining have probably done other deals to death. They have probably taken full advantage of flaws in retailers computer systems -glitches. Such people should have the attitude - you win some, you lose some.

    Ocado has a difficult future with Waitrose very soon being able to compete with it fully all over the UK. At the end of the day they would be foolish to honour all the voucher codes if that would put its future in jeopardy. I think it is more important to safeguard its employees jobs than give a discount of about £12 to thousands of customers, the majority of whom will not be ordering with them again, without a sweetner. The truth is, MSE's demographic is very different from Ocado's. It will take a long time to bring round customers who shop primarily on cost.

    Crowdity should have been the experts on how to manage these internet offers. Many of us novices could see there was likely to be a problem meeting demand, so why did Crowdity not address this issue? I can't see what they brought to the table if they could not manage this promotion well, by advising about unique codes, limiting numbers etc. What could have been a great boost to their business could sink them.


    This is simply wrong.

    A commercial enterprise makes an offer, based on building a marketing list, from which it will profit in the future, in exchange for a tangible benefit.

    It then fails to deliver any tangible benefit.

    I agree it could sink them, because frankly, there are hundreds of companies doing this at the moment and there is a case study of how to do it properly, in the form of a company valued at $25 bn.

    If there wasn't a rush to try and be the next Groupon clone, without fully considering facts like 'it might go viral' or 'what if 30k people sign up', should they be in the internet group purchasing game?

    Have you seen the heat of some of the deals on here during the last 6 years? It's pretty obvious.

    EDIT: And I just reread your post - we agree - sorry for rushing out the reply!

    I don't post very often but I'm afraid I have to in this case.

    The new wave of 'marketing', which uses a Groupon style approach, is that a company will offer a discount, in exchange for capturing your email address and an initial purchase (opportunity to provide you with their service) in order to repeat market to you in the future, with additional deals from which they generate revenue.

    That is the proposition, full stop.

    In this case, you gave your email, for future marketing activity, to both Crowdity and Ocado, in return for a killer offer - £20 for a £40 spend. That is the offer, plain and simple.

    If 30k+ people have therefore given their emails on that basis, in the belief that this is in exchange for a £20 benefit, and subsequently don't receive the benefit, it must therefore be fraudulent misrepresentation.

    If Crowdity or Ocado subsequently use your information for marketing, having not delivered the benefit, then surely we can all set up a phantom website offering £40 vouchers for nothing and then simply never deliver the promised product.

    We can then reap the benefit of the future marketing opportunities at zero cost.

    Well, in this case the customer has a 'contract' only with Crowdity. Ocado did not make any representation to us. I suppose you'd have to go to court to find out whether your personal information will be considered sufficient consideration. If Ocado was going to budge on this, they would have done so by now. They've had MSE at them all day. They've decided the bad publicity will cost them less than continuing the promotion. And I agree. Many who did mange to order said they wouldn't do so again at normal prices. Ocado can't compete on price, so they're better off concentrating on attracting customers for whom quality is the most important factor.

    I always thought Ocado WAS waitrose's online arm.

    But they are nothing to do with Waitrose. So who are they - and where did they get my shopping from?

    I've just been reading that Waitrose are expanding online deliveries - to push out Ocado.

    And how come they took my John Lewis/Waitrose voucher - if they are not Waitrose.

    I'm confused.com :think:

    I'm not entirely sure of all the details, but basically what happened was this. Waitrose didn't have a delivery service and presumably didn't want to focus on developing one when internet supermarket shopping took off. Ocado saw a business opportunity and negotiated the rights to deliver Waitrose goods for a while. In the M25 region those rights expire at the end of June, so Waitrose Deliver will be able to operate in the M25 region from then. I think Waitrose has been able to deliver in the rest of the country for a while now, but I don't know what agreement Waitrose had with Ocado for the rest of the country. Perhaps Ocado will be required to gradually phase out Waitrose goods and get their own brands, I don't know.

    Bums, I booked my delivery for Wednesday night, but I *just* cancelled my card because of the t-shirt fiasco... Is it a payment already authorised and therefore going to go through, or have I lost out?

    You should be fine, just don't change the order and keep an eye on the account.

    Then update your card details after delivery (sounds daft, but should be fine).
  • I actually feel sorry for Ocado - They have spent years building up a loss making business and this could be the final nail in the coffin especially as Waitrose Deliver are about to 'steal' their top spending/most profitable customers.

    Crowdity come away from this unmarked - They are a new company that people have little regard for unlike Ocado who are an established brand and this will/has caused then real brand damage.

    Crowdity got this wrong for Ocado on so many levels - Allowing 30,000+ people to sign up, Not having unique codes etc, both of wgich if managed would have prevented this fiasco.
