Right Kell - goto to say seem you have a 160GB+ disk there - if it is fine - not worth throwing away - please look at putting it in your new pc ...

Okay if all cables and jumper are setc correctly - but still no response ...

Can you connect usb directly to pc - NOT via a hub
Check - no pins are bent on the ribbon cable.disk interface
let the disk power up before usb is connected to pc ....

ive gone into My Computer and right clicked on the HP_PAVILION (c: ).... gone to properties and then hardware and it has that 'y' as a disc drive.
Click on that drive to highlight it - what does it say in Device Properties below? Try clicking Troubleshoot and choose the appropriate options.

it always happens, they know the answer to everything else apart from the answer you need...
  • Check that the IDE connector is properly connected and fully pushed in with no pins showing. Notice that the IDE cable can only go in one way - there is a gap in the lower row of pins on the drive which matches with a raised ridge on the IDE cable. Make sure you haven't got it the wrong way round. Check for bent IDE pins on the drive.
