Most medieval villages and small towns all had parish churches. Property boundaries were poorly defined in these times but essentially families wanted their loved ones buried in hallow grounds. The church just allowed this to happen and didn't actually cotton to charging for it till some time in the mid 1800's. On that basis church burial yards filled up and 'spread out' from the church they became seriously overcrowded.
The Burial Act of 1852 was introduced to try and fix this along with a little later the cremation acts as they simply ran out of space to bury the dead in the big cities of the time. All the info is on google if one cares to look.
The best bit which I am saving for last is that if your house is within 500 metres of an old church it is very possible it covers what was part of the medieval and or Victorian burial grounds. Much land reclamation went on to secure ground for building in interim years. If graves were ancient (there is a statutory time limit on age contained in the Acts) then they were simply built over......
YIKES!!!
I DO know of a row of houses near me - and they are rather nice - good road, etc - BUT they back onto a church and its graveyard and apparently bones often turn up in the gardens of those houses.
But I guess that cant bother everyone - as there is a house for sale locally right now that is in another road that borders onto a graveyard (in fact looks right out onto it) and the asking price on that house is £30,000 more than a house of that size and style "should" charge. There may be a particularly greedy and unrealistic home-owner living in that house - on the other hand, maybe the estate agent marketing it thinks "this (urban) area is SO overcrowded/built-up/etc that people will pay extra to look out onto some green land - even if it IS a graveyard".0 -
It's weird how electrics often seem to be affected! My dad nearly died around 5 years ago - they were away in Kenya at the time. Their house alarm started going off around the time he was in hospital out there. Also, all of my clocks stopped too in my old house when he was out there (yes, literally all, even the clock radio as the electrics all went off a couple of times). Even the one in my car was suddenly a couple of hours out. Several lightbulbs blew - quite violently! - one in the spare bedroom literally burst out of the holding the second I looked in that room - the metal part of it was still stuck in the light fitting. Hadn't just turned the light on, and hadn't been in there, but the light had been on from earlier. Each time my dad's been in hospital since, their telly stops working for a while when my mum gets home (although I do wonder if that's my mum not working it properly lol).
Very strange!
Sorry, not really a thread for 'ghost stories', I know... but it really does make you wonder exactly what's out there! Just wanted you to know you weren't alone lol (I mean us lot, not the ghosts lol)!
Jx
You want to try noises in a house that have absolutely NO possible explanation (including ghosts) - at which point you wonder if the noise is leaking through somehow from another "dimension"/parallel universe or something - now THAT is scary....and I havent been able to afford to move from the house concerned...(thankthelawd its only happened twice...)0 -
Still on page one, but I always say:-
If you go looking for insults, you will always find them, whether intended to insult or not.
Likewise,
If you go looking (listening) for ghosts, you will always hear one, whether they exist or not.
If you don't believe in ghosts, then you look for rational explanations, and nearly always find one.0 -
Just an afterthought.
Regularly we hear a loud cracking noise in our downstairs area. No ghosts.
We have three 2 litre bottles of fizzy pop in a kitchen cupboard (my choice, wife's choice, and grandsons choice re flavours) and when one is picked up and poured, the bottle distorts under your grip because of the weight. Placed back in the cupboard, they eventually restore to their original shape because of gas pressure. The crack from the kitchen can be heard anywhere on the ground floor. Spooky!0 -
If i open my back door and then walk and open the front one someone slams the back door one shut, it happens every time and there is a whoosh of strong wind through the house just before the door slams , is this a ghost annoyed thinking I am asking them to leave....Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. The reason the volume of pop in the bottle apparently remains the same is simply that whilst quenching his thirst on pop, the spirit having no physical form, the pop in the real world is not diminished.
It amazes me that people try so hard to find 'logical'/'scientific' explanations for such self-evident phenomena.0
