Our fridge freezer randomly makes a loud cracking noise (my OH tells me its because its frost free and ice is breaking off or some such thing). And pipes can easily make banging noises if they've got an airlock. The scratching noises are a bit more odd though, I've not heard anything I would describe like that. Does it always happen in the same spot, and is it when you are moving about or sitting still?

Pipes, fridges, freezers, mice, rats, birds trapped in the loft, central heating pumps, outside flaps on extractor fans ..... They can all make odd noises. Have you checked your loft recently ? We had a hell of a scare a few years ago when we heard a loud crash from the loft. Turned out there was a stack of cardboard boxes full of old curtains, blankets, etc. Mice had been chewing away at the bottom one, eventually it must have given way and the whole lot went crashing over. We've also had birds trapped in the loft, they make a hell of a racket. Mice can also get into the walls if you've got cavity walls that haven't been filled.

As a previous poster said, we also have spirits in our house. I'm working my way through a particularly nice Talisker at the moment ...

    Don't mention it.

We had spirits in a house once - there was no other explanation at all. But I didn't tell prospective buyers.

how old is the property and have you done any research into the property?

I was pretty sceptical of all these supposed things that go bump until I was working in an office in the city of london built on an ancient graveyard especially when I ventured to the 5th floor and basement

I don't believe in ghosts per se but err will admit to a period of time doing ouija (don't do it though, seriously).

Thought I was having leg pulled till I got to ask my question. Cold shiver went down my spine (as it just has now thinking about it) when I got my answer
Inside this body lays one of a skinny woman
but I can usually shut her up with chocolate!

When I thank a post in a thread I've not posted in,
it means that I agree with that post and have nothing further to add.

Definitley dont mention it to potential buyers but if for whatever reason your house didnt sell and the viewers were giving feedback like they got an odd feel then it may be worth getting rid of the spirits ( if that is what they are), I am not really into this but know many people who are and there are ways of telling the spirits to move.

I know a friend of mine went to view a house but got as far as the front door and got a funny feeling and didnt want to go inside. The house was on the market for a very long time at a low price so maybe not all a load of gobbly gook. As long as your are happy and comfortable that is the main thing

Noooo! You clearly are NOT "into this". What right do you think you have to tell spirits to move. This is their home. It's like evicting a tenant who has a valid Fixed Term AST! That is quite rightly a criminal offence, well so should evicting/harassing ghosts.

After all, ghosts are people too.
