I'm eating out of the freezer and cupboards challenge

  • I am getting on okay reducing my vast (now not so vast) stocks of stuff from the freezer and cupboards, but I keep falling off the wagon and going round to the little tescos and buying sweets:o

Tonight I used up half a packet of sausages in a toad in the hole and then DD1 came in and wanted something else, so I ate the other half of the toad in the hole (am on a diet and was only going to have half a toasted bagel and a bit of cheese and tomato), and made her some stir fry using some frozen stir fry veg and some Aldi wok noodles which I'd had in the cupboard for a while. I gave it to her with some Sainsburys yakitori chicken skewers from the freezer which I did on the George Foreman. I resurected my George Foreman the other day when I was cleaning the kitchen (one of the few occasions when I do it thoroughly and clean out all the cupboards and stuff) and I found it put away at the back of a cupboard. I washed it and used it that night and had forgotten how quickly you can do stuff like sausages, bacon, chicken thigh fillets etc. So I will use it for a while until I get sick of it again!

Am determined not to buy anything over the weekend as money is VERY tight - I am self employed and awaiting a fee cheque which is late... I have got chicken thighs for tomorrow night, which I will serve with chicken byriani which I have just taken out of the freezer to defrost. I made a HUGE bryiani the other week and there was enough left over for another complete meal.

For Sunday I will do a roast dinner with a chicken out of the freezer and I will make stuffing and yorkshire puddings to go with it.

Monday will be sausage casserole and then I think I will need to go shopping.

Breakfasts will be cereal or porridge and lunches will be sandwiches and fruit.

Do any of you make yoghurt? I have a carton of natural probiotic yoghurt in the fridge and was thinking of trying to make some yoghurt using some of it as a starter. I have an easiyo kit and wondered if that would work but using natural yoghurt and starter instead of the very expensive easiyo sachets?

Hi Jane, hope you have recovered and are fit and well again.

Spent 1.09 today, only because there was something worth buying late in Sainsburys (reduced) - got a twin pack of back bacon for 99p and a twin pack of gem lettuces for 10p. Bacon wasn't brilliant, but will use in minestrone and pasta meals.

Will spend a little tomorrow as Lidl have the mussels in garlic sauce on at half-price and sliced chicken breasts. Back bacon is only 99p for 250g and is usually a good buy.

I've managed to reduce a fair bit in my cupboards, or maybe they're just slightly more tidy than before as I've almost cleared a section, but I have been moving things about a bit lol.

I do plan to be good next week and plan meals for the entire week. I've just put up an organiser on the kitchen wall so I will do it!!

As for making my own yoghurt.. I don't I'm afraid. I only just manage to make my own bed LOL.

Apparently you can get the vouchers posted to you. It tells you how to do it on the pizza thread somewhere.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

    Hi guys,
do you mind if i join in please?
i have LOADS of food in the house (to the point where i am running out of space to keep it all!!) and need to stop spending money, so it makes sense to eat everything i have and spend as little as possible on more!

I have been writing a list of all the meals i have in the cupboards/freezer/fridge and stopped at 29 meals as i ran out of steam!!
  • Okay definitely need to get back on track with this!! without going to the supermarket (except for milk, fruit, bread and a chicken) we have enough in the house I reckon to feed us for 32 days!!! This is WITHOUT going into strange combinations of food and the really scraping the barrel cupboard finds of tinned hotdogs etc....
Somebody please ban me from the shops for the next month!!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Spent £7.53 (big spend), but got lots.
Mussels, chicken slices, onions, muffins, ketchup, carrots, swede and a couple of packets of crisps.

Need a few no-spend-days to average out a little. Positive, I need very little now for the next few days - milk maybe on Monday. Negative, still getting a few thing I don't really need (crisps, mars bars, milky ways) - got to have a few treats though!!

Just messing today, had jacket potato with grated cheese and hubby made curry and took out some nan breads.
Lamb chops out for tomorrow, make a casserole - cheese muffins toasted for breakfast (half-price in Morries @ 37p per pack of 4).
