Morning all. Brrrrrrrrrr... Looks like we haven't had snow overnight but we're due some this afternoon. Bet it starts just as I'm doing the school run! I can tell it's cold in here, my cuppa goes cold in about 10 mins lol.
Breakfast was toast and marmalade. Having fish pie from out the freezer for tea, serving it with carrots, peas and broccoli. Dinner will be soup or something. There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0 -
Morning all - thick, thick snow here today, and it's coming down like a veritable blizzard! I have plenty of stuff in so am not venturing outside!
DD's school is still open but she fell over on the path on the way out this morning and now is back and saying that she doesn't want to go out again. I have rung the school as I suspect they may close soon anyway because it is years since I have seen snow this bad round here.
Yesterday I made a stew/soup thing in the slow cooker using the beef from Sunday. Whilst it was cooking it smelled absolutely divine, but when I dished it out it had no taste at all!! Rather than waste it I added a packet of onion soup mix, some HP sauce with guiness, herbs and pepper and it perked it up really well!! There was loads so I have frozen two tubs of it.
Don't really know what is on the menu for today. I really must get back to more healthy eating. I think I will do "hurry curry" for lunch using the small pack of minced pork (its just mince onions, apple, curry powder all dry fried together with a blob of mango chutney stirred in) and then I fancy baked potato for tea, perhaps with cheese and beans (my favourite), or I might make cauliflower and brocolli cheese to go with the baked potato.
I am up for the veggie challenge - first week of Feb would be best for me!
Saw the panic buying too - mad!
I watched that programme on waste last night too - it made me really cross with that woman. I waste food but not on anything like that scale. I really do think that the supermarkets are to blame with the BOGOF and 3 ofor £10 meat and so on - whey can't they just make stuff half price or just charge £3.33 per pack of meat?
Hope you are all okay and not suffering from the effects of the cold weather.Jane

Found out today that for the past 3 months since I've got my new washer, I've been putting the wash powder in the wrong section... duhhhhh.
Kirri... I'd rather gnaw off my own leg than eat Chicken Tonight... yuckkk.
No, the opposite lol. You should be in charge of what goes on the plate, but the child should be in charge of how much they eat.
lol at not wanting snow. I only want it on weekends please!
Oh I see! Surely tho if you have a picky child you could potentially have them eating very little if you could what they won't eat but is good for them?
I'll just have to spend more time cooking as he will eat shepherds pie at the moment!
We've got a little snow here in the East Midlands it'll be quite a bit if it carries on all day :-(0 -
Jane/Kirri - I watched that programme too and was astounded at the amount of edible food that gets tossed out. Shocking really! I can't believe that woman didn't have the sense to use her leftovers, or at least cook what they'd eat, instead of enough to feed an army lol.canspendnomore wrote: »Oh I see! Well it stops the potential for meal times to become a battle ground, and makes it much more relaxing for all. Actually, from what I remember about the programme, you just leave the kids to eat what they want from their plate, don't try and argue for them to eat some more.
The kids on the programme were really fussy and had a really small amount of foods they'd eat, but eventually, because they were hungry they'd start picking at the odd thing they said that they didn't like, which the parents were told to completely ignore.. no making a big deal of it. In the end the kids were almost clearing their plates. The kids would still have the odd item which they didn't like, but they weren't being fussy for the sake of it iyswim. There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. Morning all been missing in action for a bit and my how quickly this thread has moved!
On the subject of ONSIES...I have seen grown women - wearing them in Tesco at all times of the day - bloody crazy! but I guess its not as bad as seeing them in their bikinis in the summer
I missed this TV programme last night - but will try and watch it a bit later on catch up- the 3 for £10 I think is a bit of a scam - they are smaller in weight than the regular packs
As easy as I would find it to do a veggie only week, DH and DD would freak...I don't refer to them as "cave people" for no reason - they would have loved to go out catch their dinner and lug it home. Whereas DS and I aren't at all fussed
I would join inthe No Spend Week, esp as I intend to do a stock take of the kitchen this weekend0 -

When we were growing up there was only one dinner cooked and as fussy as we all were if we didn't like it it was too bad, you ate what you wanted or that was it - I'm amazed now at people like my SIL who cook multiple dinner to suit everyone - must cost a fortune let alone be so time consuming.
As for that woman on that programme, even after the challenge she still managed to throw away a stone in food wasn't it?!
Chaos out this morning, Waitrose is normally quiet but it was heaving worse than xmas eve on a Saturday, idiots all panic buying huge quantities, hardly likely we will get snowed in, in bloody London! :mad:0 -
Belated good morning and just specks of snow here. Not melting though an still frozen. Good luck to those with heavy snow.
Just back from hubby's cholesterol "chat" and he's going on a 12 week "Healthy Hearts" programme before deciding on the statins.
Toasted hot cross bun for breakfast and hubby is having a liver and bacon ready meal and I'm having soup (quite a few tins of soup that hardly get used!!) for lunch.
Jane - 1st week of Feb would be OK, anyone else?
How about Sunday 3rd - Saturday 9th??
NSD planned and will visit Aldi tomorrow for more potatoes etc. I need eggs and ASDA have 6 f/r for £1. I'll probably get them from Aldi.

No snow here so far but snowing enough in London to affect Heathrow and London City airports. OH keeping eye on weather so he doesn't get stuck there for weekend. Ocado deliveries are affected but mine still showing up as fine. Spices of India emailed to say their courier has cancelled all pick ups in Wiltshire today so I may not get ghee til Tuesday.
I ran out of milk today and if Ocado doesn't turn up tomorrow I've no milk, eggs or bacon til Abel & Cole turns up Monday.
The fuss about snow cracks me up. Try three solid months of the stuff but in Canada everyone is geared up to deal with it. The media doesn't get quite as excited but if the traffic on the Queen Elizabeth Parkway in Toronto is crawling along because of snow and it's a slow news day they might show it.
Or if there's a heavy dump/first of winter you might get stuff about kids snowboarding at Toronto Zoo. Schools don't close, buses still work. It's worse weather in Montreal and there they have miles and miles of underground malls conneced to the Metro.
Ever since I lived there though I just never find the weather here so cold. I'll happily walk around in sweatshirt and jeans in -8C cos to me that doesn't feel cold now.
It's 46C in Sydney today
Kirri have bookmarked the Veggistan book.OH likes the idea of kicking off Veggie Week with a Middle Eastern feast. May go down and stay with my mother on the Friday so my veggie week could start on the evening of the 1st.
Lip_Stick I don't fancy lentils and Chicken Tonight either eww.
donnajt maybe if you cook something delicious they'll be temptedMy parents weren't veggie when I started (I was veggie for 11 yrs) and they joined in and carried on.
